Battleship Well, the trailer indicates this movie is loaded with action movie cliches. And of course, it's another in the Aliens Destroy Earth mode. But I'm willing to give it a shot because the Navy gets some action for a change.

I saw the Russell Crowe "Robin Hood" last night. It was much better than I expected. Since Robin is a legend and not a real person, it's perfectly fine if a filmmaker - Ridley Scott in this case - deviates from traditional storytelling. It didn't bother me one bit that there was no Sherwood Forest or Merry Men. And I liked the conspiracy between Prince John's aide, Godfrey, and King Philip of France. I didn't like care for Friar Tuck, although the beekeeper role was a nice touch, and the Sheriff of Nottingham was just a waste. To whom was he loyal? The crown? John? Richard? Himself? I had no idea. And apparently he didn't, either. Still, I thought it was a pretty good adaptation of the story -until the end, when I saw "The legend begins." Really? We go through all that just to get to the point where Robin hides in the forest, steals from the rich, yadda, yadda, yadda? What a letdown. I'm planning to see Red Tails this afternoon.

So far seen Sherlock Holmes, Contraband (saw on Wednesday) and Underworld: Awakening (saw on Saturday)! All very good movies! I think Hollywood is starting to get it! If you're into the Underworld series, this is a good one! The ending hinted at another one down the pipe!

Red Tails lived up to my expectations, maybe even exceeded them. I'd seen a movie called the Tuskegee Airmen many years ago. Even though it taught me a lot about that group of fighter pilots, it wasn't very interesting from a character standpoint. This time around, there are distinct personality differences. I didn't get all the names but I knew who they were and what they were about. The humor was subtle and realistic, unlike the "we have to have a joke here" moment that are used in so many modern movies. There is one minor continuity issue, and I wonder if it's something that got left on the cutting room floor. After the Red Tails complete one bomber escort, the German pilot referred to as "Pretty Boy" told his fellow fighters to back off and get them on the return trip. That never happened, although they did have another encounter later in the movie.
