I am glad they went with someone from a defensive background. But it won't mean much unless they change the overall mind set of the team. A great defense was not thought to be needed when you score so many points. But in this pass happy league it does well for a team to put a push on developing a strong defense to go with a strong offense. Overall the Colts seem to have made solid picks for both the new GM and head coach. Now I will be glad when the doctors decide if Manning can play or not and put this side show to rest. Seems to a new rumor every day about where he is going. For my two cents if he is able to play he plays in Indy,, with a sensible plan in place to begin the development of Luck that will lead to a smooth transition.

Dave, that does seem to be the sensible approach. I hope it works out for you.
Meanwhile, down in Dallas, Bill Callahan is the new offensive coordinator. The good news is he most likely will upgrade the offensive line - if not with personnel, then with scheme and discipline. The bad news is Garrett is still expected to handle the play calling.
But then none of it matters if they don't do something about that sieve they call a defense.

Peyton Manning is not going to be playing in a Colts uniform if he plays at all. They traded Harbaugh to make room for Manning. If they can, they will trade Manning to make room for the next QB.

The Irsays are the same people who told the mayor and people of Baltimore they would not move the Colts out of Baltimore then left town in the middle of the night.

What is sensible? The Brett Favre treatment!

Irsay and the Colts owe Manning nothing. He has been great for the franchise and has won a lot of games but he has also been paid VERY HANDSOMELY. Literally insane amounts of money whether he had good games or bad games. Things change and it is a business. No player is ever bigger or as big as the franchise. People have short memories. It took Green Bay about a week to forget about Favre.

The Colts owe Manning a $28 million bonus on March 8. It's in the BUSINESS CONTRACT! "No player is ever bigger or as big as the franchise." However, great players make the franchise. Great players are the difference between a team that is struggling financially and one that is thriving. Compare the Jaguars to the Packers.

Green Bay didn't have a 2-14 season and knew that they had Aaron Rodgers to replace Brett Favre. The Colts only have uncertainty. Colt fans will only forget "IF" the team wins!

Ars...I agree with you in that if they owe him $28mil, pay him $28mil! (I don't know the details of his contract). Finish the contract out.

What I am getting at is, beyond what is owed, Irsay has the right to gamble. If dumping Manning hurts his franchise, then he screwed up. If it helps, so be it. #1 is about making money. #2 is about winning. They usually go hand in hand but many franchises can calculatingly make a lot of money while only being marginally successful (Bears).

I just never like the premise of a star player forcing decisions on the franchise.

Is it time to euthanize the Pro Bowl?
Pro football in paradise - and the NFL rules of engagement
Pro Bowl serves no purpose - and needs one

It's been going down for quite some time, but now it's hit bottom and still digging. Brandon Marshall's highlights notwithstanding, yesterday's event was awful.
Marshawn Lynch continuing to run because the refs, apparently recognizing that nobody in that crowd of defenders tackled him, didn't blow the whistle.
Derrick Johnson returning a fumble recovery/lateral for atouchdown because nobdoy wanted to get dirty.
I'll give Drew Brees a mini pass for that drop kick. I liked the idea but you'd think he would have practiced a couple before doing it on national TV.
Moving the Pro Bowl to mid-season like other sports is probably not an option. Having it before the Super Bowl isn't working either because Super Bowl players don't get to participate. But moving it back to after the Super Bowl isn't going to help it without some more changes.
One thing I think the NFL should do is go back to rotating it among NFL cities or places where NFL exhibition games are played. But that may not be enough.
It's time to fix the Pro Bowl or kill it.

Why do they have to have a Pro Bowl at all?

Maybe just a screw around flag football game and a bunch of skills competions with a big meet and great with promotion activities. It's practically evolved to that anyway.
