Thanks to Kat for the new forum! I guess I'll get things started.

Chris Botti and Rick Bruan seem to really lead the jazz trumpet field. They both have done a lot of crossover work with other artists such as Richard Elliott, Boney James, Classical musicians and vocalists.

Why do these to artists seem to dominate the jazz trumpet field (or do they, others, Cindy Bradley...)? It seems that sax players are far more numerous.

Have they stayed more relevant with their crossover work?

It's Webmistress and Tony who keep the lights on for everyone. (I just check in on things!)

Where else could you ask for a forum.... and get a "yes"? Here on Magicisland.

good luck with the posting... smile

Yes, it does seem as though Botti and Bruan are the leading contemporary jazz trumpet players. I have three CD's by Braun and two by Botti. One of my Botti CD's is his Christmas CD, which I have often said is so mellow that he must have recorded it in his pajamas. Peace and goodwill.

Botti's "Live in Boston" cd is good. Almost every track has a guest artist and I believe there is a dvd since it was a pbs special.

It is not that Botti andBraun have lead the field, for the most part they have BEEN THE FIELD! Have wondered over the years why we have not seen more, and it is refreshing to see a new face like Cindy Bradley on the scene.

I have several cd's by both artist and I guess I spin Braun a bit more then Botti, though I like both. I have seen Braun live several times over the years while other then the PBS thing have not seen Botti in a live setting, so that may be the reason for my preference.

Are you kidding? Roy Hargrove, Terrence Blanchard, Christian Scott, and Nicholas Payton don't follow anyone! They have BEEN THE FIELD the field as far jazz trumpet players.

How many Grammy awards and nominations does Roy Hargrove have in this field?

This isn't comparing apples to apples.

You wouldn't compare saxophonists Boney James and Richard Elliot with Joshua Redman and Bradford Marsalis. You might compare Boney to Richard or Redman to Marsalis but not to each other.

Why not? Don't they all play trumpets/saxophones? Chuck Mangione (5 decades in the field), Greg Adams, Till Brönner, and Tony Guerrero are in the field.
