I've posted something pertaining to this before, but not this topic.

So I'm going to finish going to Bible College in one year, and after that I want to go to school for Professional Performance on my sax and then learn sound recording and engineering.

The thing is, if I go to a university I have to take at least 30 credit hours of non music courses. That's a lot of time and money. If I go to a specific school of music, like Berklee, I don't have to. So I save money and time and get more related education.

I live in Detroit and Berklee is quite a ways away, however the college I'm going to now is in Rochester NY. But I'd rather stay closer to spend time with my Dad because He's getting older (61) and like to spend time with Him while he can still hunt, fish, whatever.

Should I just suck it up and go to a local university (University of Michigan) or go out?

If anyone knows of any Music schools or something anywhere, that would be helpful. Thanks guys!

If you're in Rochester, then take a peek at the Eastman School of Music as an alternative to Berklee.

SUNY Fredonia down the road from Buffalo/Rochester has a good sound recording and engineering program. Eastman is more known for performance and graduate degrees.

Closer to home for you there are lots of options in Ohio, but it might too late at this point in the admission process for the fall. Bowling Green, Ohio State, Cleveland Inst.

Non-music courses are part of any degree program. It usually comes out to one a semester...or you could try and take them at home in the summers and get transfer credit.

So your Dad is "getting older" at age 61? And he can still hunt, fish, whatever? That's amazing for someone that age!

I'm being sarcastic of course. At 61, he's hardly ready for the old folks home!

yeah, but He smokes and has a bad back and knees, really bad. But still I would like to spend time with Him. But we shall see. If I don't get into University of Michigan I can try others around like ermoder suggested.
