Pat's "Orchestrion" release might surprise some of you. In spite of the fact that Pat is the only "live" musician on the release and the piano, vibes, percussion, other guitars are the work of commissioned inventors using technology, the composition arrangements have more of an "acoustic" and "human" flavor. The music, in spite of the mechanics, achieves that unmistakable Metheny stamp. I understand that Pat triggers the other instruments from his guitar and that he is taking this setup on tour. I may get to see him on May 18th at Glenside, PA's Keswick Theatre. Should be interesting.

Any opinions from the rest of you?

Phil

Sure beats having to pay 5-6 other band members while touring.

I just pick this cd up. I'll digest it a few days before giving my comments.

I haven't heard it so I'll take your word for the sound of the recording. As to live performances, I'm sure Pat will put on a good show, but I'd rather see a full band.

Currently listening to REUNION with Gary Burton/Pat Metheny. I am familiar with Pat and his music. I guess with this Orchestrion tour coming up, we will see how it "pans" out. Pat, being the genius he is, will be controlling the whole system, however, this looks to be a very large technical system and I just wonder how far down the road Pat will get before something breaks down. There is no human element here, except for himself and his technicians. Its seems a system that large could have some gliches. I guess thats being to negative, but you know, this looks like a complicated set up. At any rate, I agree with you, I would much rather see Pat with the group, including the great Lyle Mays.

One by Bob James - This album contains "Nautilus" which has the one of the funkiest intros ever.

I have listened to this cd about 6 times now and I really like it. It wasn't until about the 4th spin that it started to "click" for me. I particularly find the 1st and 3rd tracks amazing! Vintage Metheny sound. If you don't care much for Pat, you still won't after this cd. If you do like him you should dig this cd. While it is a little laid back, there is still a hell of a lot going on with the music. Contrary to what others have reported, I do NOT think this cd would have been any better with PMG or other "live" musicians. C'mon! It's Pat playing everything! How much better can it get? And he certainly pulls it off. Like it or not, and after all those Grammy, after 30 plus years, the fact that this guy still pushes the envelope like this is truly remarkable.

After all I have read I still don't understand how he ergonomically activates all these other instruments? He only has two hands and he is playing guitar already?? Is it foot pedals? There has to be some overdubs and pre-records I would think. I don't get it? Amazing stuff though. I suspect all of the jazz purists despise this release and cast it off as another smooth jazz piece. Miles who? Coltrane who?
