The Monterey Quartet - Live at the 2007 Monterey Jazz Festival
Dave Holland - bass Gonzalo Rubalcaba - piano Chris Potter - sax Eric Harland - drums
I read good things about this, so I bought it with Christmas money: what an excellent jazz album!
Peace and goodwill.

This was his last quartet album before the electric trio and now the acoustic trio. I REALLY like Redman's sax playing. Peace and goodwill.

Enjoying currently . . .
1. "Orchestrion" - Pat Metheny (Nonesuch, 2010) 2. "Only Everything" - David Sanborn (Decca, 2010) 3. "Study In Brown" - Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quinter (Emarcy, 1955) 4. "A Jazz Portrait of Frank Sinatra" - Oscar Peterson Trio (Verve, 1959) 5. "Big Fun" - Bill Evans [saxophonist] (ESC Records, 2002) 6. "On A Misty Night" - Chet Baker (Prestige, 1965) 7. "Reunion" - Gary Burton (GRP, 1990) 8. "Eye of the Beholder" - Chick Corea Elektric Band (GRP, 1988) 9. "Fields & Strings" - Brandon Fields (Paras, 1998) 10. "The Girl In the Other Room" - Diana Krall (Verve, 2004)
Pat's "Orchestrion" release might surprise some of you. In spite of the fact that Pat is the only "live" musician on the release and the piano, vibes, percussion, other guitars are the work of commissioned inventors using technology, the composition arrangements have more of an "acoustic" and "human" flavor. The music, in spite of the mechanics, achieves that unmistakable Metheny stamp. I understand that Pat triggers the other instruments from his guitar and that he is taking this setup on tour. I may get to see him on May 18th at Glenside, PA's Keswick Theatre. Should be interesting.
Any opinions from the rest of you?
Phil

Phil Sure beats having to pay 5-6 other band members while touring. I just pick this cd up. I'll digest it a few days before giving my comments.

I haven't heard it so I'll take your word for the sound of the recording. As to live performances, I'm sure Pat will put on a good show, but I'd rather see a full band.

Currently listening to REUNION with Gary Burton/Pat Metheny. I am familiar with Pat and his music. I guess with this Orchestrion tour coming up, we will see how it "pans" out. Pat, being the genius he is, will be controlling the whole system, however, this looks to be a very large technical system and I just wonder how far down the road Pat will get before something breaks down. There is no human element here, except for himself and his technicians. Its seems a system that large could have some gliches. I guess thats being to negative, but you know, this looks like a complicated set up. At any rate, I agree with you, I would much rather see Pat with the group, including the great Lyle Mays.

Phil I have listened to this cd about 6 times now and I really like it. It wasn't until about the 4th spin that it started to "click" for me. I particularly find the 1st and 3rd tracks amazing! Vintage Metheny sound. If you don't care much for Pat, you still won't after this cd. If you do like him you should dig this cd. While it is a little laid back, there is still a hell of a lot going on with the music. Contrary to what others have reported, I do NOT think this cd would have been any better with PMG or other "live" musicians. C'mon! It's Pat playing everything! How much better can it get? And he certainly pulls it off. Like it or not, and after all those Grammy, after 30 plus years, the fact that this guy still pushes the envelope like this is truly remarkable. After all I have read I still don't understand how he ergonomically activates all these other instruments? He only has two hands and he is playing guitar already?? Is it foot pedals? There has to be some overdubs and pre-records I would think. I don't get it? Amazing stuff though. I suspect all of the jazz purists despise this release and cast it off as another smooth jazz piece. Miles who? Coltrane who?

The Metheny release has really grown on me. This project has certainly solified him as one of the greatest musial composers in the last 50 years.

The Dixon-Rhyne Project - Reinvention
Rob Dixon - sax Melvin Rhyne - organ and Mini Moog Fareed Haque - guitar Kenny Phelps - drums
This is one very interesting CD! Melodically and harmonically it is most definately jazz; however, rhythmically it is all backbeat/funky. I bought it at Amazon.com. Check it out if that type of thing appeals to you. Peace and goodwill.

Jay Beckenstein-Eye Contact-underated and under publicized by Windam Hill. West Side Cool and WR`s Black Market are my faves-today. Pat Metheny Group-First Circle-Touring this year! Hope they draw enough to make this a long term reunion. A seven man unit is tough to make money on! Doug Cameron-Passion Suite-great and spicy electric violin jazz with classical influences Jean-Luc-Ponty-No Absolute Time-ditto above Tim Weisberg-Tip of the Weisberg-flute Jeff Lorber Fusion-Wizard Island-way before Jeff smoothed away the rough edges ***WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO PHIL PEOPLES FROM Pennsilvania???

Paul, I just had Eye Contact in the rotation a few weeks ago. I'm with you on West Side Cool and Black Market. It was nice to be reintroduced to the original Monsoon after hearing the SG/The Deep End arrangement so much.

Currently listening to the debut Fourplay. Not sure what to expect with this next incarnation of Fourplay with Chuck Loeb. Not all that familiar with him, to be honest. I thought Larry Carlton was a great replacement for the otherwise irreplaceable Lee Ritenour.

Wow, just dusted off the debut effort from Stanley Jordan-whew! Round Midnight, The Lady In My Life. and that mind blowing take on Eleanor Rigby. That technique-described as being like that of a piano player. Able to play both melody and harmony at the same time. Speaking of great guitarists- LOEB in Fourplay? Great. Why did Larry split? Fourplay has become the Yardbirds of jazz. That band having Page. Clapton, and Beck in the guitar chair at different times.

Abacos. Be aware that there are two sides of Chuck Loeb. Smooth Jazz and Contemporary Jazz. If you like Smooth Jazz go for his solo albums, if you prefer Contemporary Jazz buy the albums of the group Metro. Chuck also plays excellent Jazz. Here a jam with Jeff Lorber: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NZuj7K4pCA&feature=player_embeddedBy the way there are some more videos of this gig.

Just hit da MOTHERLODE: Returned to me after a short term loan turned into months or years-1)SPYRO GYRA Live North Sea Jazz FestivalDVD 2)Pat Metheny Group More Travels on VHS 3)Rippingtons Live in L.A. on VHS. It had been years since I loaned the PMG and Rippingtons VIDs out, so they were almost new listening/viewing. All 3 concert vids just blow me away!

George Duke - Déjà Vu - Déjà Vu is french for already seen.
I normally don't buy backwards looking records but Mr. Duke gets a pass because he was there when the incident occurred. This isn’t a third person account!

Brad Mehldau's "Highway Rider" : This cd took many listens to appreciate but it is certainly a nice statement release from Brad branching out a bit from his normal style. It remeinds me of Metheny's "Secret Story" cd. I have been playing it regularly for the past month.

This is twilight zone-y.Over the weekend I dusted off-acually did dust: Lee Ritenour/Dave Grusin w/Ivan Lins-Harlequin Dave Samuels-Tribute to Cal Tjader Spyro Gyra-Collection(great to hear those rare tracks with all the other best of). **Then I come here and see Phil is back and has been spinning Ritenour and Tjader as well. Cue TwiZone theme.....

Have watched "Them Crooked Vultures" on PBS three times over the past 6 months....Austin Sity Limits" quite good....each time I watch the hour set it get's better.
It is John Paul Jones new supergroup wiht Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, and two members of a group called Queens of the Stone Age.
Updated blues rock...zep meets talking heads meets cream.

Dave Koz - Hello Tomorrow
Welcome in the reality, Dave! Checking this out too. Good cd but nothing special! Not sure what's going on in the industry but many of the artists seem to mail in their recordings. They are losing me fast! That Louisiana Bayou style track is horrible, in my honest opinion! And I believe it's his first single! Bad choice!

Michael Fair - Funk In The Trunk
Trumpet! I downloaded this a few weeks ago. Not as much funk as the title suggests. In fact, the funk is almost nil, IMO.

Been away for a time, but here are a particular artist I will doubtfully ever get tired of:
1. "The Way Up" - Pat Metheny Group (Nonesuch, 2005) 2. "The Road to You" - Pat Metheny Group (Geffen, 1993) 3. "Imaginary Day" - Pat Metheny Group (Warner Bros., 1997) 4. "Still Life Talking" - Pat Metheny Group (Nonesuch, 2006) 5. "Secret Story" - Pat Metheny Group (Nonesuch, 2006) 6. "Letter From Home" - Pat Metheny Group (Nonesuch, 2006) 7. "OffRamp" - Pat Metheny Group (ECM, 1982) 8. "The Pat Metheny Group" - Pat Metheny Group (ECM, 1978) 9. "We Live Here" - Pat Metheny Group (Geffen, 1995) 10."Speaking of Now" - Pat Metheny Group (Nonesuch, 2003)
Get the picture!

Another year over...
My list of favourite tracks this year is longer than ever. Which can only mean the quality is better than ever. Picking an overall favourite track is pretty much impossible. Slightly easier was picking three favourite CDs, as they several were superb from start to finish.
2010 was: * Year of the keyboards with superb albums from Brian Simpson, David Benoit and Jonathan Fritzen. * Year of the Bossa nova, particularly by Chris Standring's masterpiece project and Bossa blue track. Will's Chill and Botswana Bossa Nova from David Benoit. There were also some fantastic up-tempo tracks from Italian Bossa supremos, S-Tone inc. Beira Do Mar being a particular favourite. * Year of the classical influenced and orchestral smooth jazz: Mark Antoine, Christ Standring and the exceptional Schroeder Variations of David Benoit's Freedom At Midnight.
This rich variety is more a return to roots of instrumental music, no longer boxed in by radio pressure. Lack of variety and too many vocals killed those stations. There is always plenty of room for oldies though; I heard Earl Klugh's “The Rainmaker” for the first time this year and one of the thoughts that occurred to me was how well it fits with some of the fresh sounds on this years new albums.
..Favourite tracks from 2010 CDs:..
Steve Oliver – Fun in the sun Chris Standring – Overture Chris Standring - Bossa Blue Chris Standring – Please mind the gap Brian Simpson – All I want is you The Jazzmasters – Touch and go Jaared – Dancing with you David Benoit – Will's chill David Benoit - Botswana Bossa Nova David Benoit - Freedom At Midnight (The Schroeder Variations) Oli Silk – All we need Tim Bowman – Let it shine
Best of the rest...
Brian Simpson – South Beach Brian Simpson – Can't tell you why Brian Simpson – Our love Brian Simpson – Paradise island Brian Simpson – Moonlit ocean Chris Standring – Fast train to everywhere Chris Standring – Sunrise David Benoit - Brownie's gone Steve Oliver – Barcelo Steve Oliver - Ba Aye S-Tone Inc - Beira Do Mar S-Tone Inc – Blue Mood Marc Antoine – Caprice Marc Antoine – Carmen B Marc Antoine – Wolfgang 40 Marc Antoine – Concierto Paul Brown – Strollin' Paul Brown – Midnight kiss Dave Koz – When will I know for sure Jonathan Fritzen – Feelin' the groove Jonathan Fritzen – Vibrations Jonathan Fritzen – Melting Ottmar Liebert – Sixteen hours Ottmar Liebert – Empty fields Ottmar Liebert – Future green
* Fav track : Chris Standring – Overture * Fav Albums: Chris Standring "Blue Bolero" / Brian Simpson "South Beach" / Marc Antoine "My classical way" / * Fav live performance: Chris Standring - Blue Bolero show * Fav vocal : Fourplay – Love TKO
