Check out this new bass amp -- it's modular in design, so you can customize your input section, eq section, and master section on your bass amp. You pay several hundred for the power amp and the chassis, and then $100 per module you want --from a simple input section, to more complex knobs and Features.

They seem to be late to the game since guitar amp simulations like NI's Guitar Rig and the amp simulations in Logic 9 offer much more for less.

Not quite the same. NI uses software to acheive it's different modeling. The Markbass is all hardware using modules with different input/output and eq options. No amp or cab modeling. I think this is more pratical for working bassists. NI is cool but you have to spend time programming instead of rehearsing or woodshedding. If one is a studio rat, it's all good. When it comes to actually getting out and gigging, cats don't want to worry about whether the software is working or not. Just plug and play.

I have Guitar Rig 4 and it has a variety of preset cabinets and wirings. It also has a hardware interface for quickly changing between different effects. Quite a few working guitarist already use NI and similar tools and still find time for practice and performing.

Still not the same thing though. The Markbass is not an amp or cab modeler. It's just a modular system you personalize. You buy the particular interface/modules you want, plug them in and your done.

NI 4 allows me to browse to the particular setup I want and I'm done. It's also modular so a guitarist can put in different amps and effects for a particular sound.
