I thought I'd share one of my compositions -- this one in the smooth jazz genre. Comments welcome -- we did this off the floor one night, as part of a sampler -- the bass sounds wrong, needing more compression so it doesn't stand out so much, so you don't have to mention that flaw...

Here it is -- legal to post and share since it's original material -- how liberating! Don't worry about my feelings if you think it's not a great tune -- but be nice about it smile

Definitely a base for a really good tune. Ok, here goes...(I'll be nice smile )

Bass: I would notch the mids, add bass and treble (the usual eq for slapping). Sounds thin the way it is.
Guitar: Come down in the mix a bit. Would also have him play longer sustained chords (add a bit of chorus) as opposed to the constant strumming.
Sax: Come up in the mix a bit
Drums: Play a more steady groove. Since the bassline is a bit busy, it doesn't sound good when both of y'all are playing busy. Makes the song really 'loose' sounding.

That's just how "I" would arrange it. But it's not my tune!

Overall, I like the tune.

Sorry I'm just now weighing in. Nice composition my friend. It has a nice "happy" Gmaj7 tonality (which I'm very fond of). Are you guys playing any gigs right now?

Thanks Fendercaster -- you nailed it -- the whole thing is diatonic to the key of G. You can solo over the whole thing using a G major scale as your safe notes....

If we ever do it again I'll dispense with the busy bass line and focus on just laying down a groove. Plus clean up the tone of my bass -- it didn't sound right. I was actually reluctant to post it since it was a first cut at it by the band, but it was all I had....

We just finished two gigs -- one at a private function, and another at a university latin jazz festival. I tried getting university students to act as booking agents for us, but they were really unreliable so I've given up on that one. And that in spite of giving them a nice piece of the overall take for the night.

So, I'm forging relationships with NACE (National Association of Catering Executives) to do a promotional gig at their next annual meeting. I'm also contacting booking agents to handle the business end.

The bottom's fallen out of playing clubs unfortunately. Plus I don't like the scene and all the girls hitting on me (just kidding). So, we're going to focus on corporate events, conventions, wedding planners, and relationships at event planners.

Thanks for asking...bw
