Michael Wilbon may have said it best. I'm paraphrasing:
I want to see Brett Favre playing until he can't play any more. But this annual drama of "will he retire, will he come out of retirement?" that gets people talking for 6 months and has teams unsure of whether or not they'll have him, has gotten old.

Colt's loose their first pre-season game, what a dreadful start to the season....opps wait a minute we have'nt won a pre-season game in five years. Little pre-season panic setting in gotta calm down now, just the site of roof open at Lucas Oil Stadium got me all fired up.

See Vick is at practice with the Eagles. Glad to see he is getting a second chance. Did not care for what he had become involved with but he did paid a hefty price and I wish the aniamal rights folks would go home.

Just a thought could not the NFL found a more positive way to make use of the Stallworth case then just ban himn for a year? I would have prefered a shorter time off and long term community service working with kids on this problem of drinking and driving. He screwed up, but from what I hear from him would seem to make him a perfect choice for such a role.

I'm with you up to a point, Dave. He did kill a person. I think a year is fair.
The season's starting later this year. Anybody know why? I thought the pre-season games were kind of late starting, but I thought maybe it was just because I hadn't looked at the scheduled and couldn't catch the games on TV. But opening day isn't until Sept. 13th.

While there wasn't intent, I thought Stallworth's crime was much worse than Vick's. KIlling a person versus a dog???? I hope Vick does well. He paid his dues. What happened to Stallworth could happen to any number of us. He was very unlucky that night and will have to live with the scar forever. I wish him the best.

I think it sucks the season starts so late. I wish they would eliminate 2 preseason games.

The start may be about a week later, I think we are just wanting the start that is seems so late. I am with the idea of cutting two pre season games. Somewhat pointless anyway.

Don't get me wrong guys, I am not suggesting that what Stallworth did should be downplayed. Just think the league could put him to better use then just not letting him play. Is this a form of punishment or just the NFL trying to save face? I just wondering outloud if there are not some other options available to the league.

Oh, there are other options, but I think Goodell is doing his best to maintain a positive image of the league by those who are not part of it. It's very easy for critics to look at the millions Stallworth and other pro athletes make, and want to crucify them, and I'm sure that weighed into his decision for the one-year suspension. The settlement to the family was fair in that they agreed to it, so as not to end up in a long, drawn-out court battle. But it pales in comparison to Stallworth's salary. The disparity can breed a lot of resentment.
No, you don't go overboard just to appease folks who want heads on a platter. But I don't think making a guy sit out a year is all that harsh. Pacman Jones didn't kill a person or a dog, but Goodell let the hammer down on him. I don't think it's saving face so much as it is sending a message.

Good points Woody, and I don't disagree at all. I guess the thing that seems different to me is that so manh of these guys that get into trouble were problem people in college and then went on to be problems in the pros as Pacman was and is. From what I understand Stallworth has not been that kind of player. He is standing by the ruling and will no doubt be back in a year a better man and perhaps a better player as well. I guess in the end the important thing is that men like Stallworth and Vick learn from the mistakes they made. I think both will and that may be the best to go after all.

I think it's cool that McNabb campaigned for Michael Vick to join the Eagles. That shows a lot of class. Being a Cowboys fan, I don't want the Eagles to have any more talent than they already have. But it's still a very cool thing - ack, what's up with the Jags' uniforms? - for McNabb to do.

I wish Brett Favre would just shut up. I enjoy watching him play, but I am so sick of this drama he puts us through every year. I'm quitting, I'm not quitting, I want to come back but my body hurts. I want to be a Viking. Wait, I'm not ready. Sorry, guys. Surprise, boys. Jackson and Rosenfelds, y'all can go home now. Brett's in the house.
