Okay, I'll get it started. It's almost that time.
For the moment, have a laugh or two: Romo's no Peyton Manning, but hey

Oh you brought a smile to my face with that. grin And you are right it is about time, I am suffering from a bad case of football withdrawl and need a fix soon. Did have the College Football Hall Of Fame inshirement here in town this week, but that not quite the same.

Some of the kids I work with got me into a fantasy league last year, believe it or not my first time. Think then thought they were going to make sport of the old man. Got stomped on the first week, then started making move after move and ripped off nine straight wins before my second and only other loss on way to a 14-2 mark and the championship. Wonder if they will invite me back this year. smirk

Regarding Vick, I would take him in a heartbeat on my NFL team. (But since the Bears now have Cutler I am not interested). Throw Plaxico Burress in there too.

I think Roger Goodell is a good guy and is trying to up hold the integrity (smirk) of the NFL but let's not kid ourselves. This is not the 60's and 70's. The NFL, like all major sports today, is about winning, money and ratings. Pure entertainment. Sure there is a question about character with Vick but the guy (in my opinion) has paid a huge penalty and quite frankly I find what he did no more repulsive than beating up a women which seems to barely get a slap on the wrist these days.

Agreed, Steve. I'd say the same for Stallworth. Guys like Pacman Jones, who can't stay out of trouble for a season let alone a career, don't need to be reinstated. But Vick has paid for his mistake. It's time to move on.
Ooh, it's almost August. Just a few more weeks.
Just a little side note about college football (anybody else want to start that thread?). It might not happen, but I really like that the talking heads on ESPN Radio are taking a good look at Ole Miss. After the nation's top 5 perennial powerhouses (Florida, Texas, etc.), who do you like as a serious national championship contender. A lot of them believe the University of Mississippi - the only team to beat Florida last year, with a lot of returning starters, a good QB in Jevan Snead, a good defense, and Houston Nutt as coach - should be part of the conversation about who'll win it this year.

I too think Vick should be allowed to play and play now for that matter. He will no doubt lose a few games at the start in part because he lied to the commish about his involvement. But he has paid a rather steep price for his foolish mistake.

Thing that confuses me is you kill a dog, (which was indeed wrong) and it is 18 months in jail, but get loaded a run down and kill someone in car and you get 30 days. Where is the justice in that?

As for the college thing, I will get back to you on that. Being from South Bend, I just hoping we beat anybody this year! grin

I don't know that 30 days is appropriate in the Stallworth situation. From what I understand, the family supported that sentence, and he was remorseful. If that's the deal that was worked out with the victim's family's input, I got no problem with it. Now I know some people will say the family's need for cash outweighed justice.
I say: Who are we to judge?
Ask anyone who has ever lost a loved one to any type of homicide, and they'll tell you, no amount of prison time will bring their family member back. So you can say, "Throw the book at him; give him the max." But is that justice or vengeance? On the other hand, if you're a poor family, here's an opportunity to do something - get needed medical care for a sick aunt, put kids through a good college, buy a modern home so everybody has a little elbow room. Do you pass that up on principle?
And if you're angry about drunken drivers, you can speak out at more schools, civic clubs, churches, etc., if you have a 6-figure travel budget.
Just offering another way of looking at it.
Now, having said that, Goodell still can make him pay simply because he violated alcohol/drug policy and it cost a life. Criminally, I'm satisfied. But as to Stallworth's playing football, I don't have a problem if he is reinstated, but a substantial fine and some league-imposed community service requirements wouldn't be out of the question.

I have no real problem with Stallworth being allowed to play or for that matter with his light sentence. I understood that the family had input in the matter. What he did does point out a major difference to what most of the celebs do when the get in a mess. He admitted he was wrong and made to the effort to make it right in some manner. Unlike Vick who kept up the denial process for so long. Probably would have been less difficult for him had he admitted to it from the start.

The only difficulty I have with the Stallworth outcome is that those of us who would not have had the means to to offer a payment for our sins would have faced a long jail term. But in the end I guess if everyone comes away satisifeid then he should be allowed to play. He will after all have to live with fact of he did and that may be punishement enough.

Former Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson died today from cancer. He was 68. I knew something was up when the Eagles named assistant coach Sean McDermott the new defensive coach last Friday. I just didn't realize it was that serious. R.I.P.

It's official: no comeback for Brett Favre - at least for the time being.

I hope he stands by it this time. Not that I don't like the guy, but with his age and injuries it would be best to retire and let the fans remember him for the good years not as some has been who tried to go it again one year too many. Farve had a great run now go home do some fishing and enjoy the family and let that body heal.
