It doesn't look good. IMAC had struggled with the bills for a long time, and even the fund raisers weren't enough. We all loved the IMAC, but the struggle is an economic issue. I think it took a lot of effort from Michael and Kathie to keep the doors open.
Perhaps someone else may step up and carry the torch, it would be a real shame to waste the space. But the theatre itself needs major renovations to electrical, plumbing, HVAC and infrastructure. Any work done to the space must comply with federal law for disabled access - and that means an elevator or escalator - or a new entry way.
IMAC's closing has already affected routing for our JumpstartJazz shows and Scullers in Boston. We've had September and October cancellations from artists that we've extended offers to.
