Wow....what can I say except thanks and thanks again to Mr. Phil Brennan...the sixth Gyra(or seventh or eigth or ninth depending on the era!).
This is prime stuff. It is amazing how the band puts new and fresh spins on old material. Heliopolis. Jay always plays it a bit differently every night...as if his memory rememebers the previous night or tour and by instict he has to play it differently each night. It is in his jazz DNA.
And that is equally true of Schu, Jules and the others.
What a band.
Paul

Now this is in the top one percentile of all Spyro Gyra compositions.....Mr. Brennan...THANK YOU for sharing this gem.
Looks like the band has put fresh spins on the solo sections--once again!!
Like Dylan, the only prediction you are safe making about Spyro Gyra is that they will change things up. It's in the band's NATURE.
Thanks again. I am sharing this as my way of helping to promote the band.
Peace, Paul

Rather than starting a new thread, I'll just mention this here.
Spyro Gyra has just been recognized by Billboard magazine as the artist having the most Top Ten Albums of any act in the history of the Contemporary Jazz Chart.
Pretty cool.

It's worth quite a lot to mention this fact here....and even more so in Billboard. Just an amazing testament to Spyro Gyrs'a amazing and incredible staying power.. Think of the one album wonders....or the bands that had an great first record or two, and then fizzled out. Spyro Gyra just can't be ignored. For THIRTY solid years....within the fickle winds of changing fashion and flavors of the month....this is very very important to now realize. Spyro Gyra has changed, yet remained highly popular and successful..
That says it all....30 years of top ten records.
Peace. Paul

Another notable fact about Spyro Gyra is that it's audience always looks forward to the new CD, show or set list. We don't rely on just listening to their hits from the past as so many other artists tend to do especially those that have been around for 30 years. We still enjoy SG's songs from the 70's, 80's and 90's especially when they always perform a new arrangement. I have seen "Old San Juan" performed live several times and it is at the top of my list. I look forward to the next live show and the next CD. How many other bands can you say that about?

Hey, Bob. Been to the store lately? Sorry, couldn't resist. You're absolutely right. That's why when I pack CDs to take to work, there's always 2 SG discs in the bag. By the time I get through the entire set, it's been 5 months or more since I last played the first one.

Yeah Eril! Jay wrote that around his 30th birthday. And just when I thought Jay had grown permanently tired of it--NOT in the set since the old HOUSE OF BLUES WEBCAST days from nearly TEN years ago. But suddenly OSJ is BACK! Now I am gonna click over to the clip of OSJ that Phil Brennan shared--in honor of that BILLBOARD announcement about the most top ten records! PEACE. Paul

Just to let everyone know I came across some new concert videos on youtube from recent concerts in Brazil. Not quite computer savvy enough to post links but check out "newest" clips. There is a 10 min version of "Down the Wire" with incredible Scott bass solo. Enjoy!

Maybe it is due to the fact that it had so many hits but is available on the NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL DVD. Nothing wrong with encouraging people to pay to view at some point--at least for stuff that CAN be purchased. Paul

Rafael- Based solely on the live videos shared here by Phil Brennan and others: Old San Juan Heliopolis Laser Material Down The Wire ...are possible. In recent years, the band has offered generous helpings of the new record. SO IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE Down The Wire CD. Paul

I had recently heard Spyro at Scullers and they played a cool rendition of Laser Material and a whole bunch of oldies but goodies. De La Luz was one of them.

Yeah De La Luz is always at or near the top of Jujio penned Spyro-or non Julio penned for that matter. I like the new wrinkle-Julio's new bluesy intro-love it. The ensemble work on that number quite possibly is Spyro at their very best when the play it as well as they possibly can. Oh-Island Time seems to be a holdover from the GTGG TOUR, if recent video posted here. I THINK THAT SOMETIME IN THE NEXT 18 MONTHS, JUST TO HAVE IT ARCHIVED-JULIO'S ''DON'T GO'' SHOULD BE PRO SHOT. Just for posterity. Paul

Also from a concert in Lituania in 2004: here is the link to Florida straits, the rest you will find there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=745RVRqsRMA

Wow...I missed the Birkes Law and I Believe In You links. But I was blessed with more financial resources and travel AUTOnomy in 1998. I caught FOUR concerts in a 300 mile radius on that tour. I do remember posting a review in the ''recent spyro concert info'' thread. In it, I posted that Jay gave so much on his closing solo that he was totally out of breath when he tried to back announce Cashaca and Birks Law...and during the band intros! I Believe In You...well it was a dramatic take. Jules+ Jay playing

(cont'd)-J+J playing parallel melody lines. A stately piano turn by Tom Schuuu. A stinging, emotional bluesy solo by Julio at the coda. That tour also had Doubletake(!) and Nothing To Lose(with Julio quoting from Puple Haze in his solo). Gotta look for those. Can't wait to get to work so I can use the computer to watch BL and IBIY-heh heh heh(am posting this via cell phone). Paul

You are very , very lucky to have seen them so many times ...what can I say but that I feel terrible envy...I have seen them only recently for the first time i guess it is better late than never. And that is the reason why I enjoy SO much seeing all those live recordings that keep appearing on youtube. I would give anything to see / or hear any songs performed live from the album Breakout which MUST be my favorite.

Yes you correct. I do NOT for one SECOND take it for granted. So many of contemporary jazz's great bands have not toured and/or recorded for years. Pat Metheny Group(my second favorite band in jazz)has done nothing for 5 years album or tour! So NEXT Saturday, even though it will be my 45th Spyro Gyra concert since November 8, 1985--I am still excited and nervously on edge. They are a different band in several subtle ways every concert. So, I am high with anticipation for next Saturday's HYATT NEWPORTER GIG!

45th concert ????!!!!! Jealousy is eating me up inside ...TRULY !!! Hope you tell us all about the concert. From what I have read in the other post they will be playing only 2 songs from the new album. The video posted from their concert in Brasil with Down the wire and a huge bass solo from Scott is absolutely amazing.

I promise to post a review. I owe-it- to the band for giving me so many mind blowing moments since I adopted them through my brother Thom, way back in the Freetime days! And to the Spyro bretheren here who shared their reviews and insights. They are the best band. Paul

I can't remember if I posted this before or not. (This thread is getting long!) But, just in case, (and if you're in the mood for some great blues by Julio!) here's something I found that Julio posted on his Facebook page. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYR0Wjx_uYc

...Joel's vid featuring Prince George's County, MD and Howard University's own National Endowment For The Arts recipient, Michael Bowie on bass...

The most recent two are from the same Jazz Central show on BET-J from around the Got The Magic era. I recorded this and another one on VHS and several of us on this message board ended up with our own copies. The original tapes and VCRs have aged and aren't what they used to be. Don't even know why I still have them.
Sunny Sumpter was the show's host on these two videos.
This is likely also around the time when Schu met Keter Betts at the BET studio and was shocked when he found out who he was and what he was doing there...

Oh My!!!
Jay is just outstanding on his out solo!
Thanks....now onto "Porkpie Hat" which was in the set for two years at least back then....and just a dramatic highlight every night.
AND...it is back in the set in 2010!
