Saw him tonight and the whole band just shredded the stage... It was bittersweet, many members of the Porcaro family were in the audience tonight. (Jeff, Steve & Mike Porcaro are originally from CT). Luke paid tribute to them and talked about the end of Toto - he said "there just weren't any more Porcaros and Paich left in the band, it wasn't my high school friends anymore." I have loved Toto since it seems like forever.... all the way back to how they sounded on Boz Scagg's Silk Degrees.... I still smile when I hear tunes from that album. And of course, Toto was the studio band behind Michael Jackson's Thriller.... Luke played a song of his that the Tubes covered - Talk To You Later but predictably, there were no Toto tunes. I was hoping for his cover of Bodhisatva... but had to make do with a jam in which he eventually ended up dancing and singing to James Brown's Sex Machine. It was pure and classic Luke. I posted a few pics and will try to post some of the band over the next couple of days. Weingart rocked.... as I probably mentioned the last time I saw him with Luke.... way different than his stuff with Weckl. Did you say 'the end of Toto'??? Are they no more or is Steve no longer down with the band? I thought their last cd was pretty good.

Geez! Right when I was just really getting to know them! I mean I knew most of the hits but was never really interested in them back then until recently! I bought their latest cd and I also bought that really good live cd with Lee Sklar covering for Mike!

I'm not sure which ex it's about... but let's just say that I was feeling it!  I was in the 2nd row, so he got a chuckle out of seeing that I knew all the words....because I was the only non-male in the first 3 rows! And they knew all the words, too! Oh absolutely! I almost did a double take when I was checking out the band's musicians. I was like "is that the same guy as the jazz fusion guy?" "He's in Toto??" I never knew. I just knew of Jeff Porcaro (RIP). I had no idea who the other band members were!

David Hungate, the Porcaro brothers (Jeff, Steve and Mike), Joseph Williams, Bobby Kimball and Steve Lukather are the core members I remember.
I remember when I first heard Hold the Line, how I thought it sounded like a late 1960s Motown piece that was juiced up by a rock guitar solo. Actually, the more I listened, it was the piano line that reminded me of Sly & The Family Stone's Hot Fun in the Summertime. Even so, it's still one of my all-time favorite Toto songs, along with Africa, Pamela and the album cut Home of the Brave.

What a great band they were...but when I listen now, it does sound a bit, well, dated or something....I can understand his comments on Hold The Line after 30 years of playing it...but they were very original I always thought. I love his guitar playing, and Mark's correct, that's a good holiday cd, some good tunes on there. I'll have to listen to some samples of his new stuff, and maybe drag out my copy of him and Larry Carlton's shred fest, Live at Osaka... He does have one seriously impressive discography...I never knew Helen Reddy used a rock guitarist

I wish you guys could have seen him.... he is so phenomenal. I would kill to see him with Larry Carlton....
Just this dinosaur's opinion..... he comes from the day when one had to write and play your own material. Yes, there are major supergroups who come into our focus.... but with very few exceptions, I think the production is over-processed and slick. I miss the days of bands being responsible for their material - rather than a hit making writer.

Even some of the "dated" material has a depth and flare that's lacking in a lot of today's music.
Oh, and since you mention Larry Carlton, lately, I've been hooked on either listening to or humming one of his best solos ever:

Kat, I'm with you there- maybe it happened more than I think in the "good ol days", but I'd feel lied to if bands like the Who, Led Zep, Rush, Allman Bros,etc, just took a catalog of songs and picked which ones they wanted to do, rather than wrestling through the creative process together to create those landmark tunes.
Yeah, I know, lots of blues covers, and some accusations of tune theft, but for the most part the records were pretty much what the bands sounded like live, and I prefer that.
At least there was the assumption that they "owned" the song rather than just performed it.
