Well, being a guy, I can't say that it was an actual crush. But in those days, I hated the Yankees for no better reason than, well, they were the Yankees. But Bobby was one of those examples of individual players I like in spite of the team he played on. Sort of like Kevin McHale on the (ack) Boston Celtics.

He also played on some early Spyro Gyra, and also with Marcus Miller...wonder what Marcus has to say about it....

Just fished out a vinyl LP, Hiram's... Give It What you Got...his Atlantic debut... had Ricky Peterson, the Brecker Brothers, David Sanborn, Al Jarreau, Will Lee & Don Alias on it. I always identified with him... we're about the same age, and he was born in Japan - a military kid like me.

So sad. I'm playing the vinyl now.

Yeah, "You Send Me" with Al Jarreau was perfect....absolutely perfect.

Artie Traum, a master guitarist who was part of the Greenwich Village folk scene in the 60s, a first call session picker and solo artist thru the 70s and 80s and even made a really good SJ album in the mid 90s, at 65 after a battle with cancer.

I'm late in reacting, but I was stunned to learn of Hiram's and Artie's passing.

Hiram was one of the last interviews I did before my then-publisher made me stop writing reviews about non-local artists in the newspaper. (I did get away with doing Eric Clapton and Van Morrison because Clapton did a tribute to Robert Johnson and Morrison covered Love Everybody, a song written by Willie Foster, who was a local favorite.)
Hiram was very cool to chat with. Most of them are, but he was one of the most enjoyable at the time. It was for his album Try Livin' It, which is very good. If you haven't heard him sing, he has that gruff quality like Darius "Hootie" Rucker. Oh, and there's Hiram's guitar.
