I have a friend who plays bass, and is looking to broaden his horizons. He is a fan of the Ripps and asked me how to achieve the sound Kim Stone gets on a tune like "One Summer Night in Brazil" from the Live in LA version (in particular, the intro).

Honestly, I don't have a clue because I'm a guitar player. Is this something he does with volume swells, some kind of delay? chorus pedal? I don't think he plays a fretless bass on that recording but maybe I'm mistaken.

So help me out bassists- how does Kim achieve this sound on the bass?

I believe Kim was playing a Roscoe back then. It also sounds like a fretless through a chorus effect. I believe Steve Bailey played on the original and Steve plays fretless exclusively. I'm quite sure Kim played a fretless on that tune.
