Grew up on Iron Maiden, Rush and Ozzy...then moved Into the progressive metal side. Dream Theater, Opeth and Redemption to name a few.

Fast forward into Steely Dan, The Flower Kings and Yes...then someone says "Have you ever heard of Spyro Gyra?" The rest is history.

I now own 9 of their CD's and cannot stop listening. Heading to my first show in Minnesota next month!!

Good to Go-Go is by far my favorite, Wrapped is probably second.

So what is an SG concert like anyway?

Other than the "classic" SG, what do I need to buy?

These guys are amazing, just started getting into jazz so I admit I know very little.

Thanks for putting up with me.

Leafs,

Based on your nine purchases, you're headed in the right direction. On this board, you'll get infinite opinions on what releases are the best investment. You might as well just put together your own collection and judge for yourself.

You'll be thoroughly amazed with the concert next month. You'll see the utmost in professionalism, a group of guys who thoroughly enjoy each other and thoroughly enjoy what they're doing together. After the show, more likely than not, you'll have the opportunity to meet a down to earth, humble group of guys who fully acknowledge that they know where their bread is buttered.

Tell 'em Gary from Maryland and Magic Island sent ya!

Couldn`t have said it better myself...Rossi`s is a great place to hear them, this will be the 3rd or 4th time i`ve seen them there, they have always had a meet and greet after the show everytime i`ve been there. Also welcome to the board,it`s a great place with some very knowledgeable SG peeps here.

Peace

Spyro1

My favorite is also The Deep End . They are a great live band. I saw them in 2006, and I have their concert DVD. Peace.

Any idea what the set list is? I read on an earlier post they play most of the new CD, can anyone confirm that?

Seems like this is going to be well worth the drive!

First welcomw to the family...the band and it's fans really are that....you'll find out!!

One thing you will find at a Spyro Gyra concert is that the band is not married to the arrangments on the record....by and large, nearly every song features extended improvistion on the solo's, and most four or five minute tracks will clock in at 7 or 8 minutes due to this. When Tom Schuman takes it out for an extended solo, he will signal the band that he's ready to take it back to the main theme by either lifting a hnd in the air, or by looking at Jay or Scott and when eye contact is made he just gives 'em a mini-nod or two. Jay kind of does a quarter circle turn around the sax mike and looks over to Schuu when he's finsished with an improv. And most or all all the solo's are just amazing and extended...if you time the first three songs with your watch, they will clock in at over 20 minutes or even 25 mintutes aggregate(meaning an avg of 8 or 9 minutes a song).

Set list at last October 3rd concert at Cerritos Calif:

Jam Up
Simple Pleasures
Get Busy
Wrapped In Dream
Shaker Song
Catching the Sun
Morning Dance

Island Time
Funkyard Dog

Encore:
After The Storm

I am have a brain freeze on the track between the Shaker Song and Island Time, I have it in my head but can't name it for some reason....it's off the GTGG CD!!

I'll get right back to ya with the title, but FYI, Phil Peoples said he got a different encore...and I think he got Heliopolis too at his concert in Penn...Eril also had a slightly varied setlist from the above at his January concert in FLA.

Enjoy...welcome.....and please report on you experience, if possibloe jot down YOUR set list, as they often change without notice!!

Peace!
Paul

Paul:

I think it was "Easy Street". That was the encore in the miami show last month.

Welcome to the board, Leafs.
I suggest one of two approaches to getting more SG music.
A - Play it safe.
B - Take the Plunge

A - Get "Access All Areas," "The Best of Spyro Gyra - The First Ten Years," "Road Scholars" and "The Very Best of Spyro Gyra - The GRP Years." The two live albums and the two compilations cover a wide range of music this group has done, including the contrast between studio and live sounds. Then, based on what you like from these, you can choose the corresponding albums if you want to add more later.
B - Depending on how much you're ready to spend, get any or all of the following:
Morning Dance, Incognito, City Kids, Alternating Currents, Breakout, Rites of Summer, Three Wishes, Dreams Beyond Control, Heart of the Night, 20/20, In Modern Times, Original Cinema, The Deep End, Wrapped in a Dream.
