This post is meant to clarify what Moderators do.
A few points about board moderation... because for newcomers, we don't have a *sticky* thread which stays visible at the top of the thread list and reminds one of why the forums are moderated.
Board moderation means that moderators have to make sure that the rules are followed. It doesn't mean we edit or delete threads if we don't like the content of the thread.
Moderators will shut down or lock any thread in which someone else's opinion is not respected, a person is publicly flamed or we receive continued complaints about private messages from individuals who harass other boarders.
So if someone doesn't like an opinion - and flames another person, the moderator issues a warning. It's as simple as that.
If the flamer continues to flame, or the thread degrades, unfortunately - it gets locked and the flamer gets another warning. If it gets horribly bad, the flamer's ID is banned from posting on the board.
Moderators have the responsibility to ensure that these rules are applied to opinions which are either positive or negative. As long as the original poster was respectful of others - he/she has the right not to be flamed. We all accepted a registration agreement when we signed up. The ability to post on a board does not mean that we can post or say whatever we want - and before freedom of speech gets brought up (it usually does when a warning is issued) - what I'm talking about are the specific points in the registration (below).
The board also has other rules .... and one of them is the opening of redundant threads instead of posting into an existing one. We try to stay on topic and post into existing threads, if they're running - we do that to keep the board clean and to preserve our storage capacity. Unlike many music boards, you can find threads on MagicIsland which go back to 1998 and earlier - one can find these threads by using the search function. I personally haven't enforced that rule here or "slapped" anyone on the wrist for that because we do get many newcomers to the board who don't realize it.
Another rule on the board is no commercial posting or advertisements. It's a fine line to watch for when there are so many active pro and semi-pro musicians who are also fans. It has to be clear that the *opinion* is an opinion and not an *opportunity* to push CDs or advertising for other music services.
If anyone does not agree with this registration agreement or needs clarification on any part of it, then please send a private message. If you have other concerns, please contact us and we'll do our best to work them out with you. Thank you.
