OK, looks like DW scored a nice hit on a Roland keyboard amp, which reminded me I had never posted pics of my "pawn shop" find, my Schecter Omen 6 lead guitar. There was a thread about this almost two years ago, so I thought why not start a fresh one. Anyway, here's the guitar. The first pic is of the guitar with no flash, so you can see the sculpturing on the body...I like it, it looks like veins. The second is with flash, so you can see the wood grain. Plays great and sounds great too. Anybody else want to post some ? PS, edited this post, since it's been an active thread, I was getting tired of seeing the same ol pic each time I opened the thread....

Three years and counting, no new gear. I'm not sure whether to be proud or disgraced.
Stingray 5 Aguilar 2X12 Sansamp RBI pre-amp Yamaha CP2000 power amp. BBE Sonic Maximizer Sennheiser 372 Wireless
I'm always looking for something new, but being in a band that plays basically every weekend I'd simply be looking for something smaller without losing any headroom. I don't think it exists.

Very fun game today! I can't believe we're not playing tonight!! We'd play Sloopy in every set. I was disappointed to hear Mike Hart dogging the Buckeyes afterward. Here's a decent shot of my ray in action: http://216.147.22.252/gallery/album96/Boneyard_Nov_11_06_027

Nice Stingray. I may be looking into trying one out (or a S.U.B.). While I love my Yamaha, the wide string spacing is killing my hands! I find myself reverting back to my Tobias which has tighter string spacing.

Hey Rob- Nice shot of a great bass, I've only heard good stuff about those. By the way, like your dance moves with Avril on Build Me Up Buttercup :p Seriously, looks like you guys are having a blast. Glad to see you guys are staying busy. Sloopy would have the whole place up and dancing, even those with way too much juice in their systems... I have a request tho....you need to add Don't Fear The Reaper, (Blue Oyster Cult), Louie Louie (Kingsmen, I think) and Gimme Three Steps (Lynryd Skynyrd) and maybe some Stevie Ray Vaughn, if you're lead guy can handle it. What a great game, tho, eh? Michigan kept battling back, but OS would answer. One of the best ball games I've seen in a good while. Anyway... DW, yeah, the string spacing on some of the Yammys (especially the Patatucci series) can be huge. My Yamy 6 has them almost too close, very difficult to slap, although that rarely comes up these days. I've been using my Warwick 5 mostly lately, plays great and spacing is perfect for me. Mainly becuase the Yammy is soooo heavy (15 lbs) and it needs a new volume pot, getting lots of scratching sounds out of it when I raise or adjust volume. Maybe I'll repost pics of them...

Well, I've made the decision to sell it or trade it for a 4 string bass of some sort or bass amp heads, cabs. If y'all know anyone who may be interested in the Yamaha TRB1005, please send them my way! I have some interest from a cat who has a '90 USA Fender Jazz Bass Plus (Lace Sensor p/u's/Kubicki pre) that he may trade for the Yamaha.

I love the Stingray, but it has to be your thing. I love the sound, but I also like the feel. I actually prefer the neck on my Yamaha, but I only play it when my shoulder is bothering me, so I haven't experienced any hand problems.
I got my Stingray at BassCentral for about $1400 (I think). That was 3 years ago and they had recently discontinued the Blue Dawn finish, so I was glad to get it.
Man, I gotta get some new videos. Those are old!!

Hey Rob- glad to hear you've got an ace guitarist, that makes all the difference. Wild guitar, tho- I saw Bill the Cat from opus, and several other comic characters. Apparently he's got a sense of humor too. Cool. Must be a custom paint job for sure, not much demand for one like that By the way, what strings do use use? I'm trying out some Ernie Balls on my 5 string, they sound great for now, not sure how long they'll last, but I love the tone.

I used the Ernie Balls for a while. No matter what I try I always end up back with the D'Addario nickel roundwounds. Honestly, I've never found a string I absolutely LOVED.
I hate to admit that I'm very guilty of not changing my strings often enough. I'm talking like every 4 or 5 months. When I finally do change them it's practically like having a new bass. Then I wonder why I don't change them more often.

If I remember correctly the guitar was painted by a local college student. Talk about talent!
It's a custom guitar made by local manufacturer Hill Custom Instruments.

yeah, me neither....I've used the D'Adarrio's a lot, since they are readily available at places like Guitar Center. Trying the Balls just for a change, they were less, thought I'd see if there was a big diff or not. Sounds great to me.... I really liked some flatwounds I used several years ago, but haven't been able to find them since. Really rich fat sound and much less "squeak". My technique has improved, so the squeak isn't so big an issue anymore, but I loved the feel, and they were far easier on the fretboard. Another one I tried was GHS Boomers. They sound good too. So did a set of Elixirs, but I'm not rolling in the bucks playing bass, so those are a bit out of reach. Great strings tho, lasted me close to 8 months (I usually change every 3 or 4 months at most.) They looked odd by that point, a bit fuzzy but still sounded good. Only issue is, from one string brand to the next, the diameter as it sits in the bridge saddles can change, and that causes major setup redo, to get the intonation back to correct. Anyway, off topic a bit there, sorry. I envy you that Stingray, lots of Nashville pros like that one too. later TY

I have Elixer Nanoweb Steels on my Tobias (I love those strings) and Dean Markley Blue Steels on my Yamaha. The Blue Steels I have found to be very inconsistant from string to string. The E is the only good sounding string in this particular set. The B is horrible with no definition! I may stick with Elixers (I know, pricey)! But they sound really good and bright and they're really easy to play (very smooth feeling).

Hey Rob. That's a nice Stingray. That or Fender Jazz or P-Bass for recording sessions. I just finished a two-day country session yesterday and the bassist was using a jazz fretted and fretless. The Stingrays have a lot of meat to it.

Hey! Way cool! As long as you guys keep sharing your G.A.S. attacks, lil' ol' rookies like me can reap huge benefits . Still a little "strung out" on the strings thing. I'm not gigging, just practice about 12 hours a week so how often should they be replaced? Are there any early tell-tale signs that they need replacing? Hey Bruce! Your friend looks awful familiar. Was he with Paul Brown in Detroit last summer (2005)?

Hey BillyG- a neck through is another way of building a bass; normally, like on a Fender Jazz Bass, the neck is bolted on. A "neck-through" is one piece (like a beam) from the tuning heads to the bridge. They have better sustain and sound quality in some cases, but can be very expensive to repair. Just another way to do it, there's a lot of variations on these things. here's a pic from the Warwick site, of a Katina neck through. notice the wood in the middle, going all the way to the end of the guitar. That's a classic sign of a neck thru. A "set neck" is in-between a bolt on and a neck thru. another Warwick bass, the dolphin. Generally speaking, a bolt on will cost less to produce, and will be less to maintain. A neck thru will be pricier, but the stability and tonal qualities make it worth it for some. Hope that helps. Later TY

You're gonna love that bass. Good buddy of mine (with much more disposable income, something of a collector of basses) started out learning on that one. It sounds great, you can do a lot of "tone shaping" with the basic controls. Lots of heat from the pickups, and heck it's just great to look at if nothing else. He's since bought several (Pedulla, Fender, etc) but always ends up playing the Peavey most of the time. It's solidly constructed, holds a tune very well, has great tone, and sustains for a looooong time. You'll probably want to throw away your Toby after playing it, so throw it my way when you do :p Later TY

Update: I received both the amp and Peavey Cirrus BXP. The amp works fine. No problems that I could see or hear. Now for the bass............It's a really good looking instrument. Looks and feels well made! Loved the action (really low) and the body is smaller than it appears in the pic. Nice and light. But..............I had to send it back! It had a horrible buzzing in the neck espescially when playing the E string! I could not figure out how to get rid of it! It had to be a truss problem. I thought it may be the string or the bridge but it was definitely eminating from the neck! It really annoyed me as I wanted to like and keep the bass but alas! The second thing that bugged me was the pickup placement! Where I usually play on a bass was right where the pickup was and it was just in the way I felt. I have returned it. I did, however, buy a Godin Freeway 5 Leaftop 5 string passive P/J and will give a review when I receive that one. A little cheaper than the Peavey and it comes with a nice gig bag. Plus I'm much more comfortable with 34" scale necks. Stay tuned................

Well, I'll try to make this short. There was a play that I was in last week entitled "Me and Mr. B., the story of Billy Eckstine. As it turns out to my knowledge, the show will become a screenplay. So, once I get the okay and the financial backing goes through, I get to contact the drum and cymbal company of my choice to build or pick up several vintage drum rigs for the movie and soundtrack. Now, from what I remember, The major drum companies around that time frame were Ludwig, Slingerland, Leedy, and Gretch, and Zildjian of course, was the cymbal company. They'll give me word in the new year of when to start working on the vintage rigs. This will be interesting for me because I get to use actual calfskin on the drums for audio and visual effects for the movie. I'll keep yous updated when '07 rolls around.

Where I usually play on a bass was right where the pickup was and it was just in the way I felt. I have returned it. .. Sorry to hear that; I think you're right, the only thing that could buzz in the neck would be a loose (or broken!) truss rod, or maybe the fretboard lamination to the neck. Heck, could just be a loose nut floating around in the truss cavity, but you'd think that sort of thing would buzz on the A string and the low B too...too bad. May also have been a fretwire slot was sloppy or something. Gremlins like that are hard to track down. Nice looking substitute, tho- let us know how it plays out for you. Not familiar with that brand name, but looks like a Fender Jazz axe to me. About the pickup placement; that's an interesting point. I like using the side of the neck, and then each string up one from the one I'm playing, for my anchor...but when slapping or anything, you lose that. So, I've been using my pinky resting on the lower side of the fretboard edge or even curled under the high strings between the neck P/U and the end of the fretboard; that actually helps with muting the loose strings too. (I'm slapping with my thumb, side of knuckle, and popping with my index or middle finger.) Then, I noticed this.... Norm Stockton simple slap lesson and the fact that he had his MTD bass modified with a ramp Norm\'s five string which he says keeps him from getting too much finger under the string. Huh. Learn something new once again But, if you watch his slapping hand, I don't see what he's anchoring on, other than his forearm on the body. I thought that little plate was to give him an edge to grasp. I may try a variation of this just for fun, to see if it works. Anyway, all that to say, yeah, pickup placement is CRUCIAL and nothing is more irritating than crunching a finger on a pickup that's not wherre you are used to it being.

Bruce, that sounds like a great opportunity. Although, I have to say if you can get a set of Drum Workshop's go for it. You can get vintage sound from those too, depending on the model, and there are so well made, they'll last for a loooong time to come. It's mostly in the skins anyway, and in the quality of the woods for the shell. DW is outstanding, but high priced, and worth it from what I've seen.

Way to go Bruce! Let us know how it goes! As for the bass, I tried to play right on top of the pickup (sorta like a ramp) but I like having the open space beneath my fingers! It just didn't work for me! I like to rest my thumb on the pickup and play in the space between the 2 pickup arrays. The Cirrus' pickup array are placed too closely together for my taste! Some folks dig the ramp thing though! I'm hoping the Godin arrives in playable condition. If I have to do any upgrades, I won't have a problem doing so. I still plan to buy another 5 string 34" scale active and I may have Nino Valenti build me something. As long as it is 34" scale, a bit tighter string spacing, a really good and quiet pre-amp and less than 9lbs! I'm a stickler on heavy instruments! I hate 'em!

Yeah, DW, I like to be right over the pickup on my Yamaha, but on this Warwick, it's a smaller shelled pickup, so not really anything to get a grip on. Speaking of weight, lately I've been playing the Warwick more for that reason. It is about 8 lbs, compared to the Yammy's girth of almost 15 lbs. I'm basically in three different bands now, and the two newer ones require my standing up to play the whole time. At my old church, we're doing three morning services now, so I HAVE to sit at least some of the time, and since we occasionally do a gospel number, I have better use of the six string there. A PITA to slap on, tho, due to that string spacing. Anyway.... here's a shot of them side by side. I love them both.

Thanks guys. Funny that you mentioned DW drums, Bassix, because that was my first choice off the top. The reason I was thinking of the other companies was only for historic purposes, but, if I can get away with it, DW's what I personally want to use for the sountrack.

On it's way... LA Sax has introduced all new models and they're closing out all their old stock. I found this directly through one of their designers Steve Goodson. This may be the first time in my life I was in the right place at the right time to luck into a "deal."

New update. I received the Godin......didn't like it.......returned it and am now getting an Ibanez SR505. Something I'm more familiar with since I used to own one which I bought back in '95 or '96!
To be continued!

SHeesh, Dave- fickle, aren't ya? Seriously, I understand, dude- why keep a bass that you won't play because it's not exactly what you want? No need to pay for an ornamental bass, that just sits around collecting dust. I've heard good things on Ibanez, I've played a 4 string and it was a great bass for the money, a friend's wife had bought it for him to learn on. I'd have used it for regular performances, if it were mine, sounds and plays great. Post a pic when it comes in..... Later TY

So if it's been three years, why'd you spend your money on a SAX? Seriously, that's one funny piece of writing! Thanks for the chuckles. Let us know how long your wife let's you practice sax before she either a) runs out of the house screaming about moving back in with her Mom or b) falls at your feet screaming "take me take me" from being exposed to the seductive passion of your playing. Like the article said, music is about getting chicks. :p Later TY

Well, I did get a new rig earlier this year, but the price I got it for was outrageously cool. Back in feb, I bought a 5 pc. PDP(Pacific Drum & Percussion) rig, the FS model, which is DW's bottom line gear, but still sounds great. the sizes are 10", 12", 14" mounted floor, 16" x 22" kick, 5" x 14" snare, all birch, satin red finish. The amazing part is that I got'em for 320 bucks!! I'm gonna get off my butt and order a matching 8" rack to complete it 'cause my Teal Premier APK's has 8", 10", 12", 14" mounted floor, 14"x 22" kick, 5 1/2" x 14" snare. I'm looking forward to next year 'cause I'll get to start building vintage and custom rigs to play on again.

sounds like a deal, Bruce- Pacific is a good way to get the DW sound etc without having to blow your budget. I'd take them over Pearls and Lugwigs. Not quite as well built as the DW's, but they'll last you many many years in normal use. THe DW's are made to be played constantly and to go out on tour with, so they have to be heavier duty, which shows in the price. I will say, we've have no trouble at all with any of the DW pedals, hihat stands, kick pedals, etc that we bought for our Roland set. Rock solid hardware. My "new" gig, we just bought a new set of drums (so our two drummers wouldn't have to constantly be lugging thier own set each week, and resetting the mikes every Sunday, etc.) We got Pacifics. The cymbals is where a lot of the money goes, tho...man those things can be expensive! Zildjian 4 pak Later TY

I dig the PDP's. With the custom v-rig being stationary at the church I play was my idea so drummers wouldn't have to lug their rigs also. I just bring my DW pedals, Roc n Soc throne, in-ear headset, and sticks. The cymbals do cost, especially particular ones that a drummer may like and want. I've got a pair of Zildjian k custom dark crashes that sound beautiful, but cost me a piece, but they match up real nice with my 8" K splash, 20" custom power Z ride to the right, and my 20" Istanbul Mehmet light ride to the left(I switch the rides around from time to time pending on how I'm feeling what I wanna hear and textures between playing left and right handed), and my 14" Paiste Sound Edge hats. As for the sub kick, John Legend's drummer's using it on their tour, and it's nice. It picks up the low end and round the kick off the way it's suppose to, and it sounds great.

Jim, I got the 655 for $450. It's fully assembled. All they had left was the antique finish, so I was a little worried it would look greenish. But its actually really nice - a beautiful. They warned me that it would come with a stock plastic mouthpiece, so I wasn't expecting much there. However the ligature won't fit around the reed. In order to get it on I have to completely unthread the screws, then they won't thread again. It's bizarre. So I suppose I'll take the mouthpiece to a store and see if I can get a ligature that will fit. I've never played soprano extensively - I was always an alto and tenor player. The horn is much heavier than I anticipated. Apparently others on the internet agree. His signature tenor is beautiful, isn't it? http://www.nationofmusic.com/ecommerce/images/images_big/Model_6_Tenor.jpg Rob

OK Rob- Did some digging around to see what we had bought mouthpiece wise. First correction is, my son's sax is a Yamaha YAS-62, not a 55. A wonderful sounding horn. The 62 was a cosmetic change to the 61, which was a very popular 70's sax. The 62 is now discontinued, we bought it on closeout at the time. I just checked ebay, saw one for 2 grand, about 500 more than we paid new. Anyway...the mouthpiece is a metal (gold, plated I presume) one with a bite insert, made by Peter Ponzol. They sell his stuff through regular music stores, at a high price in my book, but....we had gone online to buy his reeds, (which several players my son knew and respected absolutely swore by...they are hand cut) and found that he makes custom necks, mouthpieces, etc. He offers his "demos" and slightly damaged or prototype mouthpieces on his website at a much better price, IF there's any available. His hard rubber ones are about 85 bucks. This gold one (an early model m2)was originally $219, we got it from his site for 85 bucks. It had a scratch in the finish on the under side of the neck joint area, so it's not even seen most of the time. Here's his site : Peter Ponzol mouthpieces You have to go to his store to see what he has on his shelf, but since he's a working player making mouthpieces for other players, I'd say his quality and sound are outstanding. My son's playing improved almost immediately, it was easier to blow and get a consistent sound, and allowed him more dynamic possibilities, since he wasn't having to work so hard at it. Not trying to push one particular player, but this guy has a great ear and knows what a sax should sound like. I was also pleased with his shipping, customer service attitude, and willingness to answer several emails with our questions on how to care for it, etc. Anyway- hope you get some time to practice and play it, and we're looking forward to hearing a clip of you playing it with the band! Later TonyY

Tony,
Thanks for all the information. Those are definitely nice looking mouthpieces. I just want to get off the ground with something basic, but the mouthpiece that came with the horn is definitely hard to blow through. The guy who shipped it to me warned me it would be. I just need to get out and try some. He's got a hard rubber soprano listed on his web site at $89 - which I could definitely live with.
Thanks again, Rob

no problem Rob- And of course, as you know, the reed makes a HUGE difference too; my son started on a 4 to build up his embochure and then gradually worked down to a 2. Lots easier to blow, but they'll crack more often. He also tried one of the synthetic ones, it lasted a loooong time, but mostly because he hated using it, and only did when he was out of reeds He got to where these Ponzols is all he'd play, and I have to say I loved the tone of them. Only downside to ANY of these saxes is there's not much way to control the volume, so you need a good place to practice that doesn't drive the rest of the family crazeee. Once the chops come, then the dynamics are easier to do without major squeakage. Good luck with it, and you're right, go try some mouthpieces out. There's hard rubber ones that sound fantastic and play easily too, so it's all personal tastes.

Hey guys. This past sat., I was playing in a club at Marriott Sawgrass TPC, and the bassist had this beautiful 6-string Warrick that sounded great through the backline gear onstage (Full GK rig), and he's about 25-26 years old. Well, none of the guys mentioned to me who he was other than his name being Rick, and we got the chance to rap, we rapped about the industry, and that's it. They give him a solo on Mercy Mercy, and I'm thinkin' to myself, "This young cat knows this tune?! Well, to rap it up, he played his butt off, and I come to find out when they mentioned his name again, they mentioned that he's Usher's bassist! My jaw dropped! Young boy could hit!

Yeah, you're right. As a matter of fact, he plays at a church here in town with the guitarist and keyboardist that were older cats on the hit saturday. What's funny is, the group they have normally do festivals, and Jon Reshard and his dad works with them. It's a total church connection that plays many different styles of music. This was the group I played with back in January when they opened for Najee', and Najee's drummer is a DC church drummer who played his butt off. There's a bunch of church musicians on the scene.

Picked it up at Office Max, was only 15 bucks, great deal. Must be a one-time type of thing, it's not on their website. Other than that, no new equipment- anybody out there get anything? Later

I got a couple titanium rods in my back and a whole lotta PAIN! (I dig that Ohio Players tune). No gear, but a couple of books with cd's. One is pretty good; stand-alone bass tracks. Almost like karaoke for bass guitar. Beats trying to keep up with Kevin Tyler's act! (Hey KT!) I've also been trying to pick up the bass line from Marion Meadow's " Diggable ", but I really get lost there. That stool sounds pretty cool Tony. I don't have anything I can comfortably sit on; not even my backside. The Peavey is within my weight restriction, but I can't stand up with it. I'm going stool shopping. Does that count as G.A.S.? :p

Well, one of the keyboardists at the church play for owns a piano/keyboard shop here in town is in L.A. at the NAMM Show, and he mentioned to me while he's there, he's getting the particulars on possibly working out an endorsement through his store as a dealer with Roland. So, if it works out, I'll pick up a Custom V-Drum rig with a work station and amps. I haven't really dug into the brain on the rig at church, but, if I have my own, I can become a mad scientist and put in the ultimate drum and perc. rigs that I would use on any venue, and write and arrange what I would need.

Bought an Ibanez AS73 Artcore Semi-Hollow electric guitar at Guitar Center the other day for $260.00. I was looking at a more expensive guitar but thought this one looked and sounded great. It's basically an ES335 wannabe!

Traded away my Lakland JO5 for a Fender USA Standard Jazz bass. Bought 2 new GK Neo112 cabs and I also bought a couple Epifani PS112 cabs used. I sold my Avatars and I regret it because I have not found my sound with the new cabs as yet. Dunno if it's the amps I'm using (Markbass and Genz Benz). So far I'm not quite digging the GK's but the portability is great at 30lbs each.

I got some new Pearl drums and a used Pacific snare drum. I also got a new Sabian crash cymbal for some stuff I traded in. Peace and goodwill.

I now have a Gretsch set with an 18" bass drum, which is quite easy to move. My new Pearl bass drum is 22x18, a very big one and not so easy to move. But sometimes I just like the big boom it provides. Peace and goodwill.

I sold an old keyboard and got some money from some after-school workshops I attended. So I bought a Pearl Sensitone steel 14x5 snare. Tomorrow I am also getting a Sabian XS20 16" Medium-Thin Crash. Peace and goodwill.

Got Komplete 8. The box comprises 12 DVDs including 27 instruments. It includes a studio drummer too!
