So if we had to say what the best album was musically in terms of great playing, great playing, and great producing, though focus here on the playing...Which would it be? Honestly, I'm going to say their newest Let It Rip. Anyone else?

I will say Metro's Tree People & MetroCafe' cd's! The Rippington's Curve's Ahead is a classic as are several Spyro Gyra cd's.

Overall on albums, Miles Davis on Columbia produced several great ones, Bitches Brew comes to mind. I always thought SRV's In Step album had fantastic playing by all. As far as the Ripps go... Live in LA beats em all.

DW, you're right, but I'll cut bd a little slack, honest oversight, if he came here by way of the ripps website.... as for best playing by the ripps, that's a tough one, but I'll take High Roller and Curves from Live in LA for the "old" band and most all of Let it Ripp for the latest incarnation. As for others, there are so many, but one that always comes back to me as being truly unique and memorable is Grant Geissman's guitar solo on Chuck Mangione's Feels So Good....once that gets in your head, it's there all day. Another great lick is Larry Carlton on Kid Charlemagne with Steely Dan.

No picky'ness intended. You never said "just the Rippingtons". Additionally, this forum was intended for musicians to discuss musician related topics. At least I thought it was........

Oh right perhaps I misunderstood, I just don't see people getting into the nitty gritty musical details of the Ripps on the main part, so though we could discuss it in here. For example why not ever try to do a "live " studio album? In other words, live in the studio with very few overdubs? That's all I meant...

Well, they did that with their last cd, Let It Ripp. Not sure how many times Russ is going to do that though as he is very meticulous about how he wants a song to sound. I know how that can be as I've presented my songs to band members and it just didn't sound the same so I refused to bring any more of my songs to the table. And I've been on the other end as I've gotten studio calls and had to learn songs on the spot and I've come across many bassline that were either impossible to recreate or just plain wack and I would try very hard to play it my way with my own stamp on it if you will but sometimes it just doesn't work out.

Let It Ripp has a great feel to it because it was written to capitalize on each player's strength. blackdiamond, I know you don't enjoy searching on topics, but there are some pretty good threads on Let It Ripp. The main one is 6 pages long and has some interesting info about how the cd was recorded and mixed. posted May 30, 2003 07:49 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Steve,
your second question has been somewhat of a debate amongst the various polls and topics. Since its release, I noticed that in many pollster's reviews of the CD that have stated that they felt that the other band members might not have contributed much. This is so far from the truth.
Avalon is one of the most memorable tracks in my mind during the process. I think even have some photos of the Russ and Eric writing the charts for the song.
Here is how it went:
Russ would write the chart, Eric would read it and then audition it (BTW, Ed Calle is the only other Saxist that i have ever seen work that blazingly fast). After Eric was ready, we would track the performance. Russ had the most say for the overall melody, but Eric's performances beyond the main hook were really his own. Russ simply gave him the thumbs up or down. The beginning (as well as the outro) parts after you hear Billy's 1st notes are a perfect example of this. Other great examples of Eric's own inspiration can be heard on the solo in a Private Getaway (still freshly burned in mind) and Cast a Spell.
I wish that we filmed the Sessions down here. Russ would have put em up and the fans would been really better informed as to what goes on. It is very hard work, but results are very magical.
-------------------- Cheers Mark Also, Nick S & the band members do lurk and read the posts in the Ripps forum. Nick, are you out there? (Just saying howdy)

I really sensed that too Kat, though I didn't know that, just because of the way he feels out the phrases and spacing with his tenor. They made a joke about having to run to a pawn shop when some fan asked them to perform Avalon, which they said "we hadn't rehearsed and hadn't planned on doing" I had that feeling seeing it live too...

They added Avalon to the set after the 3 opening nights in Boston. By day 5, they were playing it....

That had to be one of the highlights of the Charlotte show too- Eric is just such a great player, and he and Russ really seemed to enjoy playing off of each other's riffs, trading licks as it were......Avalon became a pretty rocking tune by the end of it, would love to have a live recording of that- a very dynamic performance by all. I was in awe most of the night anyway, after getting to meet the band and hang a bit, then to see them play their hearts out- I'll never foget it. Hey Kat, here's one for ya, musically speaking- WHich is the better bassist, Kim Stone or Frank Felix? I haven't seen Frank Live, so you'll have to judge......

How can I answer a question like that? Both are tremendous bassists.... and I hear them in their respective bands which are so different from each other..... not an answer, I know. It's like comparing a Porsche and Ferrari. Kim is the Groovemaster, Frank is the Funkmaster. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :p

I know comparing Kim Stone to say Jaco Pastorius would be wrong, different styles, different approaches ... Each has their own strengths and powers on the Electric Bass.
