for recordings past, Russ would often compose what he wanted played and that's why he plays on so many tunes. Let It Ripp has a great feel to it because it was written to capitalize on each player's strength.
blackdiamond, I know you don't enjoy searching on topics, but there are some pretty good threads on Let It Ripp. The main one is 6 pages long and has some interesting info about how the cd was recorded and mixed.

your second question has been somewhat of a debate amongst the various polls and topics. Since its release, I noticed that in many pollster's reviews of the CD that have stated that they felt that the other band members might not have contributed much. This is so far from the truth.
Avalon is one of the most memorable tracks in my mind during the process. I think even have some photos of the Russ and Eric writing the charts for the song.
Here is how it went:
Russ would write the chart, Eric would read it and then audition it (BTW, Ed Calle is the only other Saxist that i have ever seen work that blazingly fast). After Eric was ready, we would track the performance. Russ had the most say for the overall melody, but Eric's performances beyond the main hook were really his own. Russ simply gave him the thumbs up or down. The beginning (as well as the outro) parts after you hear Billy's 1st notes are a perfect example of this. Other great examples of Eric's own inspiration can be heard on the solo in a Private Getaway (still freshly burned in mind) and Cast a Spell.
I wish that we filmed the Sessions down here. Russ would have put em up and the fans would been really better informed as to what goes on. It is very hard work, but results are very magical.
