Hey fellow gang members -

Since you guys were kind enough to check out my original sample tune a while back, thought I'd post this arrangement for your enjoyment and hopefully get your comments.

This is an old hymn called "O The Deep Deep Love of Jesus".
We've played it many times in it's traditional form (with drums and bass and horns added) at our "mother" church. But, we've never done it at the new church plant that I'm part of, and a member here thought it'd be a great song to redo. So, I took it upon myself to do an arrangement of it, \:D just to get the feel and groove across to the members of the band that I'm in.

It aint perfect, for sure....but I like it.

One of the dangers of redoing old familiar tunes is, you can really tick off those who see it as "sacred" stuff....to me, it's music, either way; this just updates it to expose another generation to it, and besides, it's the words that matter for the most part in hymns, especially this one.
If any of you are interested in the lyrics, PM me and I'll send them to you.....don't want to be accused of "forcing my religion" on you guys \:D

Basic stats, the intro and breaks are mine, the rest is to the basic chord changes.
Two verses, the hymn has three.
It's really a 12/4 tune I think, but it fits ok into a 4/4 groove, which was the best sample drum loops I could find for it. Pretty funky loop.
Drums are from Pro Sessions, an add-on drum samples cd package. They sound a hair distorted, due to having to change the tempo a bit- cakewalk is weak on that. But still sounds better than midi's. I have Sonar now, but haven't learned it yet...it may do a better job on the acid-ized samples when tweaking the tempo.

Warwick 5 string bass is recorded direct, through my sound card- no, I'm not using pro cards and interfaces.....I wish, just not enough cash right now.

Guitars are run through a cheap Digitech effects box, and recorded as is. Using my same Schecter Omen6 that I got in a pawn shop. My lead playing can obviously use some work, but the melody is just for reference for these guys.

Anyway- if you've made it this far, here's the link.

Enjoy, if you choose to....let me know.

Thanks

BillyG-

Well, good, it's not supposed to make you feel like you're in church \:D , at least not it the traditional sense.

Thanks for checking it out.

Tony, I think it's cool. I'd like to hear how you're phrasing the lyrics. I've always liked hearing different perspectives on traditional hyms done in a contemporary format, and different styles of music. I've written an arrangement of Andre' Crouch's ballad "Quiet Times" from his album "I'll Be Thinking Of You", but put it in a tradtional jazz ballad style, something I think Tony Bennet or Bobby McPherin would sing so to speak.

hey Bruce-

Thanks

as for the lyrics, it'd be following along with the lead melody, basically- if you've ever heard the original, it's pretty much that. THe one spot where the changeup is, is where it says Underneath me, all around me, is the current of thy love"

I'll send you the lyrics via pm, that'll make more sense...I hope.

Later
TY

Hey Tony. It's nice to have fresh ideas on traditional tunes. I'd like to hear it when you finish it completely.
