I figured this was as good a place to post this as any.

On Yellowjackets "Mint Jam" live cd....2nd disc, last track, Evening News

Anyone familiar with this song? It sounds to me like there are two different bass players on this song. There is a deep underlying thump, thump bassline that comes in and out of the song but in many parts, at the same time, you can hear Jimmy shredding away a couple octaves higher. Killer tune!

I can't possibly think the YJ's would electronically mix that deeper bass line in, especially on a live record? Or is it maybe Ferrante on synth? Tell me it's not Jimmy doing both parts?? Wicked!

I used to think the same thing about the bass solo in Shaker Song on Road Scholars. When I first heard it I was like "Scott has 4 hands!"

I felt somewhat foolish when I found out that it was Schu playing the walking line on keys. Schu is so damned good at that stuff that you can't even tell.

It's Russ playing left hand bass on the keyboard while Jimmy solos. Like Rob said, Schu does the same thing while Scott plays a solo. A good example of this is on Spyro Gyra's 'Road Scholars' cd on the trio tune "Shaker Song" during Scott's solo toward the end.

Yup, I was standing 10 feet behind Russ during that song when they were here. I watched him play the left hand bass on the O1/W. Jimmy and Marcus had all the music directors in town rolling off the bleachers during their trading solo at the end('twas an outdoor "in the park" kind of gig").

Yea, after listening to the Russ part again there's no way it was a dub 'cause it's too erratic of a line throughout the song.

I only recently got Mint Jam. This release is not for everyone as it leans pretty heavy to straight ahead jazz but there is one thing that is without question in that these 4 guys are masters with their instruments with great chemistry.
