Shannon- Meant to add a couple links here last week, and got sidetracked.... here's a few I think you guys will enjoy. All of these are courtesy of my 20 year old son.
This one is a flute player that does beatbox at the same time, to the Inspector Gadget theme, plus another tune you'll recognize mixed in there...there's over two million hits on this guy. This kid's got talent.
Another beatbox one, this one is very cool, amazing control of the mouth as an instrument...about a half million hits on this one...guaranteed you'll be impressed.

A clip from one of my all-time favorite movies, The Commitments. This is when they sing "The Dark End of the Street." It gets to me every time. If you've not seen this movie, Jesus, go out and rent it already. You'll be GLAD you did, trust me, you will!
Monk always believed that if the music was groovin', you should be able to dance to it, and that's what he would do when he's playing, and sometimes he'd get up and dance around the stage.
You're welcome Markus. There are clips of Monk in concert when he leaves the piano and dance around on stage, and the rhythm section's swingin, and he'd come back to the piano in time for his solo or ending a tune.
Although bebop was intricate and textured, you could still dance to it. When Dizzy wrote Salt Peanuts, people noticed that they could dance to this thought provoking music, and the man that got them hip on that was Billy Eckstine. Billy had an all-star lineup in his band with: Dizzy Art Blakey Charlie Parker Dexter Gordon Charles Mingus John Malachi Gene Ammons Sarah Vaughn Shadow Wilson Lester Young Dizzy learned a lot from Mr. B.

I attended ELP in the Philipshalle in Düsseldorf in the early seventies. They are a phenomenon. All three are stellar musicians and speed wizzards. Kings of music history like Supertramp, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, EWF, Pat Metheny..
Dinosaur, that would be me. I saw ELP in 1971 at the Fillmore East in NYC. It was a spectacularly dynamic show. They played a yet unreleased (at that time) Tarkus, which did it for me I was hooked.
ELP. Just one of the innovative groups of prog rock/neo-classical music. I've always enjoyed Watching and listening to Carl Palmer when I was in High school and later in college when I began studying percussion.
Clapton says "....Landreth is the most underrated guitarist in the world". Watch it all (it's only 2 minutes), because his explanation doesn't begin until about 30 seconds into it.

Already did, just haven't posted about it yet- he's outstanding! As a guitar player wannabe myself, it's so cool that he came up with his own technique like that....one of those "ah-hah" moments. Of course, thanks to you, Cab, I wasted an hour following links to other videos like Little Feat etc...man, what a great band they were.
D, I really liked the Kirk Franklin/Maurice White version of September- some of the posters thought it was wrong to mess with the song like that, rewriting the lyrics etc, but hey, Maurice White is sittin right there and digging it, so I'd say Kirk had his approval. Good stuff, thanks.
I'll have to dig around some more, this is too much fun.
Except for the Unicorns and Candy Mountain, what a lame juvenile cartoon, but it has had almost 8 million hits, sheesh....my daughter made me watch it, and said "get ready to lose five minutes of your life forever, Dad"
Hey Tony. Derek's a heckuva slide player. There's a cat here that initially taught Derek to play slide, and his name is Jimmy Graves, and I use work with this cat. Jimmy had a prog rock group with Derek's uncle Butch Trucks(Allman Bros.)with Vasser Clemems, and blues guitarist Greg Baril was another one that taught Derek. As for Kofi, I grew up back home in DC with Kofi and his brother Oteil watchin' these two play. Derek has developed into a phenom. It must be nice to have Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin fight over you to tour with them between the Clapton gigs.

Derek Trucks was in town a couple of weeks ago...amazing. I briefly spoke to Kofi bass playin' brother, Oteil....nice cat. He appeared with the opening act - Colonel Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit. Kofi opened with a flute solo for the Trucks Band....gooood stuff.

Cab woodda loved to see that show! I admire Otiel B, he's a heck of a bassist too. I wondered if he and Kofi were kinfolk.
Bought the Live at Georgia Theater last night of off iTunes....amazingly, you can only get it online, either from Derek T's website or iTunes.
It certainly fits the "jam band" description I'd heard for these guys, but a lot better than some of the jam bands out there I've been bored by....the endless noodling on the guitar, the rambling bass lines, senseless keys, random chording, etc. DTB does it too at times, but it never seems to be overdone or drawn out for no reason other than to stretch an ego out as far as it will go...it feels more like live improv and he knows when enough is enough. Trucks seems like a humble, fairly normal kind of guy. Amazing chops for a 24 year old (at the time of this recording). You can check out samples at iTunes too.

This most excellent vid of Pat Metheny, Live, playing his bizarre looking but wonderful sounding Pikasso guitar. I still think it's amazing he designed this thing and plays it so well. It's like what, 3 or 4 different instruments in one? Incredible!
Hey Tony. Yes, Kofi and Oteil are brothers. If I got it right, they are of Morrocan descent. They went to school with a guitarist (Barry Tymas)I worked with back home from elementary to college I think. I believe all three of them went to Howard University, and guitarist Paul Bollenbeck was there with them also.
Here's Deborah Henson-Conant (my heroine) wailing on a harp. She usually prefaces this with a riff about how since Jimi Hendrix is in heaven he must be playing a harp and this is what it could sound like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYGaxdxcuMY
Here's something scary. Me trying to teach the night jock at our Top 40 station a Zumba (latin dance aerobics) routine
Chieli Minucci & David Mann, couple of glimpses of Jay Rowe
The telling thing about this vid is the comments below it, the essence of them being "Who is this guy, I've never heard of him, he kicks @$$". There you have the disparity between what this music can be and who it can reach and the boundaries and preconceptions the radio format has created.

My son's school is involved in designing and building an electric high performance racing car; a couple years ago, they'd done a Honda 600cc motorcycle engined powered mini-formula 1 style car, for a nationwide contest, and it did very well. A real neck snapper.
Anyway, they've gotten a grant to do an electric version with basically the same chassis.
He sent me this as an example of what's going on in this arena of automotive engineering. The schools' car won't be as production ready as this one, it's for a different purpose.
So, all you car guys and gals, check this out. The frame is the Ariel Atom, an extremely light weight "kit car" unit, normally powered by a small 4 cylinder gas engine, but this guy put in lithium-ion batteries and a super strong electric motor, then went out and kicked some Ferrari and Porsche butt.
Zero emissions, by the way. Cool stuff. Weird too, about all you hear is tire noise, the motor is extremely quiet.

Good one Tony. I remember that summer well. When the more important "And Then There Were Three" Genesis album came out. Baker Street would have went no where without the sheepish vocals.

by small 4cyl engine you mean the 2.0 K20a 200HP honda civic type-r engine. the atom is now currently availabel with a supercharged engine of said engine, with 300HP. I'll check those links later they sound cool!

Hey Folks, Way back in March of 2002 there exsisted a thread entitled "Dreams" in Off Topic. Here was part of my post:
"Went back to the offensive huddle of my flag football team . And you know who was quarterback? Junior Brown ..ready to go on stage (blazer, tie and cowboy hat) ..No he didnt have his Guit-Steel The funniest thing was the way he looked with the flag-belt around his blazer "

That McLaughlin video was hot. He's one of my very favorites but I must admit that "Music Spoken Here" got passed me somehow. This problem has been corrected as I have just ordered it.

Everything's right, except this video shows a capital "S". I think somebody did it for a joke. The original Sesame Street spot shows them working on the letter "I".

I know, I was making a joke about the University of Phoenix in pretending to be a professor at that university, while not "getting" there was a huge spelling error in the video (by the way, notice how I spelled 'spelt' too).
Guess I'm the only one who thinks the University of Phoenix is a bit of a diploma mill....

Hi, I think I forgot to mention that I upgraded the forum a while back and made it super easy to embed YouTube, MySpace, Yahoo & Google videos into your posts.
When you create a post or reply. Just look for the button that looks like a TV monitor (see images below), and then select the type of video then paste in your link.
I think Peter White, our cjazz friend played a strong role in the Year of the Cat or Time Passages as a guitarist and member of Al Stewart's band....the guitar solos were great.
Please forgive the poor framing. This is the result of two forces working against me. One being a camera without a monitor. To see what I'm shooting, I have to look through the viewfinder from behind the camera - impossible, considering I'm up on the stage with Michael, about 6 feet in front of the camera. I pre-positioned it to frame the shot, but the woman in the video, Tracy, was modeling for me, and I asked her to use her ID badge to mark the spot where she was standing, to indicate where I should stand. She moved it, so I had to guess. The other being that without Michael in the frame when I first lined up the shot, I was unsure of how tight to zoom in. The bad framing could have been compensated for if the shot were in tighter on his head and shoulders. Notice, there's a couple of points where either Tracy or Michael's assistant repositioned the camera to make sure his head wasn't cut off. In hindsight, I should have gone with my gut and went handheld. That's what I normally do if I'm just trying to get a sound byte from a police spokesman, fire investigator or public official. But it's generally better to use a tripod for a longer interview. Still, I enjoyed meeting him. And I must tell you, the performance was exceptional.

Some of you may remember several months ago I posted my first You Tube video (a video I made a few days after my first solo with a video camera). I was just checking it out to share with a friend whom I haven't talked to in close to a year, and I came across this: Joel Rosenblatt clinic at Moscow Odd to find that as a "related video" in the rundown where everything else was about Greenville.

One of the great guitar players Paco De Lucia. Known for the live guitar trio album with John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola "Friday Night in San Francisco". Solo youtube performance:

I've known Alphonso Sanders since about 1990-91, and have always been impressed by how he plays the tenor sax. He's music professor at Mississippi Valley State University and director of the B.B. King Recording Studio there. He recently used the studio to record his first CD, Mississippi Influences, which is available at CD Baby and Amazon. Several years ago, he and some other Mississippi jazz artists performed at the Alcorn State Jazz Festival, where they opened for the Yellowjackets (my one and only time seeing the latter group).

This story is 3-4 months old, but utube ''asian lady freaks out at airport'' it is incredibly funny. You will think that she had just been told that her entire family had perished in a crash. Real reason: She missed her flight! Also-utube ''brokegump mountain'' It features Carl from Slingblade and Forrest Gump! Funny!

Just a few notes. It's long but well worth it if you want an example of how NOT to behave in public. What preceded this was Mala Brooks, the alderwoman in this video, repeatedly interrupted proceedings because she wanted to talk about a motion that hadn't been voted on while the mayor and the rest of the board wanted to proceed with the rest of the agenda. After refusing to allow other board members to talk, Mala was ordered to leave. When she refused, the police were ordered to take her out. That's when the fun starts. At one point, Mala can be heard telling the officers: "This is my mama's yard." Her mama, by the way, was mayor until she was voted out last month. And the matter that the new mayor wanted to discuss involved some unauthorized expenditures Mala and her mom used for "travel/training." Warning: Near the end of part 2, Mala utters a racial epithet, which makes no sense because, well, you'll see.

The video is just a montage of images overlaid to a recording of Rikki Don't Lose That Number. What I like are the comments below, reaffirming what many of us have been saying for years: In a word: timeless

This was the first song I ever heard by Chick Corea Elektric Band. Never saw this video until now: Elektric City
In my early days of loving Maynard Ferguson's music, this was my first-favorite song by his band. I believe the lineup for this performance is the same that was on the album version. Rick Petrone on bass, Alan Zavod on keyboard and Jerry Johnson on trombone. It's in 2 parts, so watch the first and then click the link for the second. La Fiesta

Not your father's Tears for Fears Some enterprising fans took the original video of "Head Over Heels" and dubbed lyrics that describe the action in the video.

Okay, so I go to the latest Mississippi Blues Trail marker dedication. Usually, a musician - the person being honored or some local artist who followed in his footsteps - is present. What I didn't expect, was to meet this guy:
