I've been asked to join a band, as a keyboardist. Th music consists of: Smells Like Teen Spirit 3 songs written by the leader of the band Light My Fire and some other stuff. I really don't like any of the songs except for Light My Fire and I'm not sure if they'll use any of my written songs. I need some help on deciding to join this band.

Well Saxman, you have to consider some points here. 1st, if they allow you to contribute in the band. 2nd, If you feel confortable with the songs you're going to play. 3rd, are there any steady gigs and where. 4th, Is there any good chemestry in the band or they're just playing for the money.
I've been in bands since i was 13. Now i have a band since 5 years ago and we all get along very good. Even though i'm the leader, i always let the other guys contribute and let them bring ideas to the band. Also, we know each other musically very well. We always discuss everything and their oppinion is very important for me. Even though i have the last word, i listen to them first before making a decision.
Also make sure that they like your style. I'm a keyboardist too and some times they tell you how you have to play.
So my friend, keep this things in mind before joining a band.
And last but not least, chek if they do any drugs or drink too much!!!!
Eril.

See, this is why I didn't say anything first on this, although I saw it and wanted to help you out, too. I don't play anything, but sing and did for bands ages ago, but Eril hit all the good points right on the head, my dear! You listen to his advice and you will be alright. Don't let anyone mess with ya, you do this stuff and you won't regret it and be taken advantage of or feel like "Oh my God, what did I just get myself into?" Good luck and let us know what happens, alright? ------------------ Anita Bonita

I'm facing the same type of situation also here in Virginia. I'm into Jazz,Funk,R&B,Latin,World,Blues,Reggae and a host of Ethnic music. I got contacted by a guy into Bob Weir & Rob Wasserman, Grateful Dead and the like. Nothing has come up in my choice of genre and I have to make a decision soon so I hear ya. Good advice from Eril. But I will say that if you are not enjoying yourself, then the gig is not for you.

hey saxman, i know it's a tough decision, but go for what you feel in your heart is right. if you're feeling more apprehensive than jumping right in, you may want to take a closer look. if you still feel you want to go for it, ask all your questions up front so there won't be any room for confusion or surprises later. usually you can tell a good vibe from a bad vibe. you definately want to feel comfortable with the guys you'll be spending most of your time with. consider eril's advice too. i'm sure you'll make the right decision. but whatever you decide, we're behind ya. hope this helps! peace, chandra

I've decided, I will do a special guest appearance and see if it's good. It's good because one of my friends is at least in the band(creator). The other band that asked, I really didn't have any real friends in it.
