Hi Eril! Hungry eh? I like pasta too - sghetti & meatballs! Mexican is great too but I just can't handle the oriental cuisine - and I HAVE tried it. My favorite? There ain't nothing better than a big Porterhouse steak with corn on the cob, artichoke hearts and homemade candied yams with some fresh greenbeans! Yea Baby

Eril, When it comes to food, I'm definitely multi-lingual. There isn't too much that I won't eat. The goat eyeballs on TV the other night, seems a bit far out but most other items are fair game for me. My ex-inlaws are Filipino, living in California, and one day years ago, I took a photo of the dining room table since people back home wouldn't beleive me if I told them. We had gone to Monterey Bay and bought seafood. We got Squid and Octopus and fish. My father-in-law, took the fish, cleaned them and cut the heads off. He then wrapped the fish and put them in the freezer, and puts the heads in a pot and stewed them. The fish heads and rice was the only thing that I wouldn't eat that night. Just something about a slimy eyeball didn't get it. But as far as going to a Sushi bar, No Problem. Or a Mexican Rest. for Ceviche or Menudo, that's fine with me. If I remmember correctly, you lived in NC for a while. Back when I was a kid, we had to go from Winston-Salem to either Raleigh or Asheville to get Chinese food. Now there are fast food Oriental shops about every other mile. I used to work with a young man from India. So I started going to the local Indian Rest. with him. As some will know, this food sometimes has a high heat content. But most of the time, I could handle the hot food better than him. I love to cook and get a lot of good ideas from watching Food Network on TV. But to say that I had a favorite, it would probably be either a big thick Filet Mignon, that is still mooing in the middle, or Chicken wings and beer. I also make Red Beans and Rice, and a Black Bean soup that has a little bit of a Carribean flavor. So Maybe one day if I ever get a chance to come see you in PR, then you can fix your version and we can compare.

Sushi with a lethal combination of hot wasabi and too much soy sauce, nachos with tons of chili and cheese, extremely hot wings, orange scones from Panera bakery, Real French fries not those skinny prefab fast food ones, Focaccia from Starlings Market in San Marco, also their Chicken salad with nuts and grapes, anchovies right outta the tin, and Fried Shrimp and Hush Puppies at fish camp restaurants along A1A.Boiled Peanuts and any type of smoked fish. Oh and the fluffy Cheetos..I can down a bag of those in one sitting easy. Even though they are prepared under rather gross circumstances by people you don't want to see I am still hooked on Krystals..had 7 of them on the way back from Orl last night. The fact that I am a fitness instructor obviously does not imply that I am a nutritionist. Now I'm hungry..I haven't eaten since breakfast. Too busy.

Any kind of Indian food, Szechuan Chinese, Mexican, Cajun food( all of these I love on the HOT side!), and a lot of seafood, but not the slimy stuff like sushi, octopus, squid stuff.....good sea bass, swordfish, halibut, salmon, scallops, crab, lobster, etc., good pesto sauce on thin pasta noodles ( any kind will do), salads with the kicthen sink full of vegetables on them ( don't you hate it when you go to a restaurant and order a salad, and they bring you something with only iceberg lettuce and a few measley tomatoes? Pisses me off BIG TIME....give me some f-ing vegetables, PLEASE!!!! LOL!) and for dessert, even though I am dieting, every now and then, I HATE to have something CHOCOLATE....I'm with Pete....CHOCOHOLICS ARE US, MAN! ------------------ Anita Bonita

Eril, you beat me to this topic!! well, since i don't each beef or pork anymore... i'm kinda limited with my choices unless i go for..... crab legs smothered in black bean sauce, chicken prepared all kinds of ways (especially, jerk, teriayki, b-bque, baked), definately spaghetti topped with sauce and zucchini squash (at least 3xweek), homemade macaroni and cheese, spinach, brocolli, fresh string beans, baked potatoe, yams, double turkey burger from fatburger , mom's collard/turnip greens, hot water cornbread and peach cobbler (yumm!), stuffing mixed with tofu, loove thai food, my homemade veggie pizza, red beans & rice (rice fits in almost every meal). a pint of butter pecan or pistachio nut ice cream. then, wash it all down with crystal geiser wild berry juice squeeze! WHEW! that was a mouth full and this is all making my mouth water! that's some limit huh? ... i have a feeling this list may continue continue.... great topic Eril! cheese (i mean, peace) chandra

Chandra, dear one, I have not eaten beef or pork for years, either, but you see, neither of us seems to have a boring diet there or are missing it, right? Just goes to show, there is so much other stuff to eat out there, that just omitting those two, it didn't kill or deprive us....I feel so much better not eating it, don't you? Love ya, and we all have some great food down here, you guys, ------------------ Anita Bonita

Anita,
Slight correction, raw oysters and boiled Okra are Slimy. Octopus and Squid Salad is chewy. If you can eat clams, then the other two aren't far behind. Also, were you part of National Chocoholics Day earlier this month? Pete can tell you more about this.
I tried a new recipe tonight. I had some fresh South Carolina peaches, so I made a Peach pie with an almond crisp topping. It's in the kitchen cooling down right now. If anybody comes over tommorrow, I'll let you have a slice.
Linda, Since I'm from the South, I have eaten a lot of pecan pies. My ex was from California and she made Walnut pies out there. After I finish the Peach pie, a Walnut pie is next.

its 5 months until new years but one can always plan in advance so I share this twist on a southern tradition with you "Really Hoppin' John" 12 Conehead Grasshoppers 2 cups cooked black eyed peas 2 cups cooked long grain rice 1/2 green pepper diced 1 cup diced onion (I use 2 cups) 2 tsp minced garlic cayanne pepper, chopped parsley, salt and pepper (to taste..I also dump some tabasco sauce in the pot) set aside two grasshoppers for garnish, remove wings and legs from remaining ones. heat peas, add small amout of water to rice and steam it. Saute the onions and garlic in small amount of butter until golden, add the grasshoppers and seasoning. Stir in Black Eye peas and rice, don't overcook. each ingredient should retain its original identity(!), flavor and texture. Enjoy!

now Eril see what you've started! now i'm craving that caribbean jerk chicken with that fabulous spicy sauce and a side of pigeon peas and rice and mixed veggies! darn!! i'll have to shoot all the way down to Los Angeles to get it. (if only i knew how to prepare it i'd cook it myself). hey anita. i hear ya. i was raised on pork and beef so eliminating it was hard but it was a personal change for me. since i've stopped eating it within the last 2 years i don't crave it anymore. i did try to eat pork again a few months ago, and i had a headache for 3 days! so i know i wasn't meant for my system. if i try beef it gets me sick too. so my system can't take it anymore. i'm trying to eliminate the chicken but that's hard, plus i love chicken too much. have you ever tried those veggie burgers called flamebroiled something. can't remember the exact name right off hand. but they taste just like a beef hamburger. yumm! but you're right you do feel alot better and it shows! hi txjzlady! i see you like thai food too. my favorite! don't you just love that thai bbq chicken and shrimp rice! and don't mention chicken ruby, yummm! that's does it, i'm off to get a strawberry shake! peace, chandra

Chandra and Txjzlady- How did I EVER forget Thai food?!! That is definitely one of my very favorites. Maybe because the ole hubby hates it and I haven't been out to eat it for a couple of years! Love that thai tea. A girlfriend of mine owns the one here in Benicia, and it is SOOOO good, and beautifully decorated too. Oh, those chicken skewers in the peanut sauce and the pad thai and spicy chicken salad are to die for!! Ummmm...ummmmmmm! Linda

I hear ya Linda, how did I ever forget Thai food, either? I must of lumped it in with the Szechuan Chinese since some of their sauces are similar and spicy! Love them extra spicy! Chandra, yeah, Gardenburgers were invented and started right here in the great state of Oregon! Love all their varities and there is a burger joint up here called Burgerville USA that does a killer turkey burger, too. And on their menu, as well as a few other fast food places here, you can get any burger on the menu but with a garden burger patty on it instead if you prefer! I really dig that because having a small one, you know how they love their chicken nuggets and french fries! We've tried to let Cassie decide for herself on the beef and pork thing, but since we don't eat it at home and when she has tried it at fast food places, she's not into it at all! Good for her! ------------------ Anita Bonita

I love Cajun or Creole....I have some French in me and my hubby has Louisiana French in him. He makes a mean gumbo, let me tell ya! Don't like oysters or clams, except in clam chowder, both of those gross me out to no end! YECK!!!! To each their own, I guess! BBQ chicken of any kind, or seafood BBQ, especially kabobs with a nice light sauce and mushrooms, peppers, onion and such with some nice brown and wild rice mix to put all that on once it's done! YUM, YUM, YUM!!!! ------------------ Anita Bonita

OK txjzlady and Dave, When it comes to Krispy Kreme donuts, I know a little about them. They were started here in Winston-Salem before I was born here. I have seen them grow from a regional company to the large corporation that they are today. I remember when the guy in Las Vegas finally was able to get a franchise after begging for 6 or 7 years. Now he is considered to be a King in Vegas. Last year when the stock went public, it opened at 29. I didn't buy any, which was a mistake. At one point it was about 4 times higher in one year. And that's with the rest of the market going down. Their donut mix is still made here in town and shipped to all the locations. Only a few know all the ingredients. It is a closely guarded secret. One of the secrets is using potato flour. But when you see the HOT NOW sign on, cars will make U-turns to get in line. But when you figure that one of our oldest companies in town is RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co., you know that we are good at making addictive substances!! ------------------ Layne-NC

Pete,
So a cop and donuts??? Now there's a first!! I guess that you want me to bring Chocolate glazed? creme filled??
Actually they are never as good as when they are fresh out of the fryer. To me it's almost as bad as taking a cold beer, pouring it in a glass and letting it sit for an hour. It's OK but not as good as it could be. FoodTV did a show on Snacks and they showed the equipment that they use to make them. They even had a photo of Main St. Winston-Salem from the 30's or whenever they first started. I would bring some to town next week but the company is flying me down and they would probably get squished. So far I'm getting into the airport at about 6:30 PM, Wednesday night. I might be able to skip casino night on Friday, so I might see y'all then.

For clam chowder in Oregon: on the coast ( Coos Bay, Newport, etc.) it's Mo's Seafood and Chowder House and in the Portland Metro area it's: McCormick & Schmick's Fish House. Yum, Yum, Yum, now I'm getting serioulsy hungry here! Love a good clam chowder on cold cloudy days, which today is one of ( damn inconsistent summer weather we have been having lately?) ------------------ Anita Bonita
