Steppin out is at #11 and climbing on the Radio and Records smooth jazz chart. This chart is extremely conservative (due to reporting stations not playing much new music) so it is a real accomplishment for an song to move up as fast as this one has. It is also a real accomplishment for an artist to have as long a series of charting songs as Paul has.
It is # 21 and climbing on the internet radio chart..that one moves a little slower because so many of the programmers play from their personal collections and are on a budget so they can't buy all new releases really fast..but he may get to number 1 faster cuz after a song gets on that chart it tends to fly..
Congratulations PT!!

Every success in the current industry climate is something to celebrate. As for sales..thats the part we gotta work on... There has been a lot of discussion of that in RnR recently specifically from executives at A440 and Columbia. My feeling from the perspective of a former retail and radio person who sold a lot of smooth jazz CDs by what were basically "guerella marketing" techniques..and current "new media" girl is that yes radio is important but the marketing mix is going to have to become more all encompassing to create sales. Radio is going to continue to be musically conservative. By that I mean not playing new music during drive time (key listening periods), being gold and recurrent heavy with only one current song per hour and major stations waiting until a song is in the top 10 before they begin to play it. This makes it very hard to cultivate and develop familiarity even on the core artists. We all know who Paul, Peter, Boney, Bob James etc are but the general public sitting there with a radio in the background while they work do not. A little more focus on image building and backannouncing and they would. But focusing 100% of energy on making that happen at radio is futile..it's just not within the "flawless execution of formatics" (the motto of the company I work for) . In the zen sense this is what has been placed in our bowl..we have to live with it and do the best we can to not let it stop the artists/music from reaching a wider audience. Within the current corporate structure that won't change, there are people working in radio who are passionate about the music and try to convey that as much as possible but they have to work within the existing structure or they will be joining me "on the beach" which isn't a bad place once you get an idea of all the other things you can do to support the music..but it's still not the best of all worlds. Obviously it would help sales if people would buy their own CD instead of permanantly borrowing mine but thanks for the replacement PT!!! Hopefully the other CD is getting a lot of play in it's new home and that persons friends are enjoying it enough to buy their own copy!

Yaaaaay PT.
It's still only # 19 on the internet radio chart but that may be decpetive in terms of the play that PT is getting.
Radiowave, which monitors the stations and provides the chart, works like the monitoring system the RnR Charts use. It can only record the songs that the record companies provide info on..which is the "singles". If you play anything else from the CD it just isn't recorded for the database. Radio stations only play singles but webcasts usually play several cuts from a CD. From watching the playlists of the live 365 smooth jazzers a lot of songs from "Steppin Out" are getting played so PTs airplay is spread over several songs and if it was totalled he would be in the top 10.
I play Cantina and Runaway more than the singles because I love 'em and they fit the image of the station (bright, melodic, uptempo), and the singles are already getting exposure, although I do play the singles sometimes. You can only play a certain number of songs by a specific artists within a time frame due to RIAA rules so ya have to spread them out.

Sharon Youngblood is an incredible singer. I watched her slay the competition on a televised contest (the name of which I can't remember) by delivering an impeccable performance of Aretha Franklin's "Respect". I didn't realize until later that she sang "Someone Watching Over You" on Steppin' Out (it was mentioned in a post here, I believe). Then I was amazed all over again, because I'd learned from the TV broadcast that she was, at the time, ... get this ... only 18 years old!! What a talent!

This morning in spin class the instructor was playing Paul's CD Steppin Out. She saw him on OLTL and love what she heard see, another fitness instructor gets hooked. Thats why other instructors rip off my PT CDs when I space out and leave them at the gym after class!! BTW I think spinning is the most boring thing this side of sitting in a waiting room..but to each his/her own.

Janet..
Florida has more smooth jazz stations than any other state except California. Until Melbourne flipped to rock we actually had more than Cali. We have better concerts here than our pals in the central states but being greedy I want more..I see the club gigs that happen in california and get quite an envy attack..but Fla is more casual, looser, and more fun and a lot of women over 40 don't do cosmetic surgery or botox here so it's actually safe to go out if you look like a regular person.

Hey Shannon As you know here in Northwest Florida the jazz concerts are not that great. The Seabreeze Jazz Festival in Santa Rosa Beach in great. I am 46 years old and I feel great in good shape. They can have the cosmetic surgery. I had back surgery in 2001. The past three years I have been working out has help me firm up and pain free! Lady over 40 are taking better care of themselves. So lady like you and I the real thing can hang. Peace and Love Janet
