Just wondering if you guys have any favorite instrumental Jazz remakes of old Rock/R&B tunes.
I've got a few:
'Minute by Minute' - Larry Carlton
'Roxanne' - Warren Hill
'When A Man Loves A Woman' - Richard Elliot
'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' - Rippingtons
'Never Gonna Give You Up' - Peter White

Well, a slight variation on the theme--has vocals, more like "favorite remake of old rock song by the original artist backed by jazz musicians not necessarily playing jazz": "When the World is Running Down..." from Sting's Bring on the Night. Not only is Kenny Kirkland absolutely COOKING (God rest his soul) but you have Branford Marsalis rapping. What more can I say? You all need to dig this one out.

"Any Love" Norman Brown. (Outstanding guitar.)
"Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" Jeff Kashiwa or Peter White, take your pick.
"Don't Want To Be A Fool" Peter White

Craig Chaquico's version of "Find Your Way Back" is excellent. It's a great rock song, makes an even better instumental piece.

"Find your way back", I believe, was written by Chaquico back in his Starship days so I really wouldn't classify it as a cover.

I know that, but it's still a different version from the same artist, minus the vocals. Craig covered his own tune.

Other favorites I'd like to mention are:

Stanley Jordan - "Lady in My Life"
Norman Brown - "Too High"
Rippingtons - "Caravan of Love"
Boney James - "I get Lonely" (Janet Jackson)

Because the band has five great composers already, I really don't like to see Spyro Gyra covering other artists, but on the bands "20/20" CD, they include a good version of
"Sweet Baby Jane" by James Taylor

Peace!
Paul

Hey, if anyone is a Sarah McLaughlan fan, there is a great cover of "Adia" on Richard Elliott's new CD "Chill Factor".

Couple of my favs are Ritenour's cover of Bob Marley's 'This is Love' being that Reggae is a love of mine. Also, not sure it's recorded, but The Ripps cover of Hendrix's 'Purple Haze' blew me away when I first heard it live last year. I was heavily into Hendrix in my teens so I nearly shit my pants when they played it especially since I had no idea they covered it. It didn't quite have the same effect when I saw them this year. It didn't seem it was done with quite the same verve.
