I love the sound of a song driven by solid bass players. What are some good albums to check out by people like Stanley Turrentine, Jaco, Brian Bromberg, etc, or that sound like them? I'm not really famialiar with bass players so any suggestions would be nice

You gotta check out Stanley Clarke's first solo effort titled 'Stanley Clarke'. Excellent players on that one: Jan Hammer, Tony Williams(RIP) and others.

I just received Brian Bromberg's "Jaco" and it is very good, featuring the multi-talented bassist on acoustic, fretted, fretless, 5-string and piccolo basses. The arrangements of compositions made famous by Pastorius are excellent. "Continuum," "Teen Town" (two versions), "Portrait of Tracy," "Three Views of a Secret, and "Slang(ish)" are Jaco originals.

Two more CDs you should check out:

Weather Report's - Mysterious Traveller. This one features Alphonso Johnson on bass (former Philadelphian and bassist for Weather Report just before Jaco Pastorious joined). Very nice.

The other is Joe Zawinul and the Zawinul Syndicate - World Tour. This live recording features Victor Bailey on bass. Definately nice bass done live.

Check em out!

Tribal Tech's "Primal Tracks"

Gary Willis is a monster on this cd.

Antiguabil...you would also love the guitar on this one...like heavy metal fusion.

The Zawinul Syndicate World Tour also has Richard Bona in the group. I don't know if he plays bass or percussion or both.

On the World Tour double cd Richard Bona does bass & vocals on three songs: N’awlins, Indiscretions (one of my favorite tunes on the cd) and Caribbean Anecdotes. Victor Bailey plays bass on all the rest.

Fishman - Yeap, that's him. I actually discovered him thru the Jim Adkins CD "Turning Point" (see Jim Adkins thread )and a post by Shannon on another board. Do a search for more stuff written about Grainger on this board.

Matthew Garrison has a self titled album and his presence always dominates the tracks.

Son of the legendary upright bassit Jimmy Garrison.

Silly me, I thought this was about bass players as front men .. of course Scott was just awesome on that album.
A very impressive introduction to his talent and passion.
