Make up a list of 5 of anything related to Contemporary Jazz. These show up in more specific terms on a lot of BBS but part of the fun is to make up your own category, make the list, andmake up your own rules as to what your boundaries are. I used to do these when I was writing for a radio trade paper and probably sunk to my lowest with the annual "cute guys in jazz" lists but my boundaries now are only one Pat Metheny or Al Jarreau related item per list, just to impose reason on excessive fandom. I am easily amused, have no life, and have a cable modem so I get to start:
5 CDs i can listen to all the way thru without skipping trax:
Nelson Rangell/Yes Then Yes
Bamboo Forest/Mysteries
Mark Johnson/Mark Johnson (his first one on JVC)
PMG/The Road To You
Acoustic Alchemy/Against The Grain

2:Songs That Rock Hi Paul (the treadmill/stairclimber/River Run mix tape list)
way more than 5
Ritenour-Grusin/Tequila Dreams
Rippingtons/Dreams of the Sirens
Richard Smith/String Thing
Acoustic Alchemy/Against The Grain
Brecker Bros./King of the Lobby
Mark Johnson/Blue Smoke
Freeman-Chaquico/Tribal Runner
Spyro Gyra/Joyride
Paul Taylor/On The Horn
Rob Mullins/Planet Mullins
Ronnie Laws (or Paul Hardcastle)/Always There
Neal Cowley Experience/Moomba (this isn't out yet but will be soon..)
Dotsero/Pammy's Park
PMG/Roots of Coincidence (album Version and Mr.Springs Remix)

3. coolest concerts
1.Rippingtons/Bela Fleck Jacksonville Jazz Festival 1992 (? or was it 91 oops) (this has reached legendary status in N.Fla)
2.Al Jarreau, Charlotte N.C. Oct 1980
3. PMG Imaginary Day Tour, Melbourne Fl 2/1/98 (my birthday)
4. Special EFX and Deborah Henson Conant, Jacksonville Landing, May 1990
5 Return to Forever..Somewhere in Atlanta right after "Where Have I Known You Before) came out..they played for 3 hrs. (details obliterated due to too much tripping in college?)
Players I want on my fantasy football team next year...
oops sorry wrong list...
OK..YOUR TURN

Shannon . . .

Since this great idea for a thread is your idea, I was wondering if you would be willing to post the thread on the "Smooth" board of the Jazz Central Station BBS? The address is "http://www.jazzcentralstation.com"

Be a peach!

Phil, I got it from a thread on http://www.contemporaryjazz.com where they were doing specific categories, I just twisted it a little..feel free to put it in the transporter and take it to JCS..I don't post on boards that use the word "smooth", as you can tell by the lists my inclinations are a bit more "rough"(grin)

4-CDs to trade for a Rippingtons' "Curves Ahead" CD, a Spyro Gyra "Carnival" CD or a Tribal Tech "De Hee" CD.

1. "The Music Inside" - Chuck Loeb
2. "Midnight" - Jeff Lorber
3. "First Wish" - Chris Botti
4. "Full Stride" - Rick Braun

One-for-One of course.

Shannon,

First, thanks for the name check....I think we must be kindred spirits...and I am 100% serious when saying that it's awesome to find someone of the female persuasion who likes her jazz with alot of chops and bite!

Plus, a bonus...YOU ARE ALSO INTO ROB MULLINS....this guys is sooooo talented, and his popularity(or lack thereof)is way out of sync with his talent! If you are ever in Southern California, Shannon, let me know and I will take you to see Rob on a Friday night...he is incredible....one of the only piano/keyboard players that I would accept as a replacement for Tom Schuman if, GOD FORBID, Schuman ever left Spyro Gyra.

Five Favorite Guitar Players:
1)Jimmy Page
2)Ronnie Montrose
3)Pat Metheny
4)Julio Fernandez
5)Scott Lindenmuth
Hon Mention...Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Al Di Meola, and a bunch more that I will have to add later.

Side One Of A Recent Contemporary Jazz Tape I Compiled:

1)Shaker Song(Live, "Road Scholars" Spyro Gyra)
2)My Little Mystery(Open Fire by Ronnie Montrose)
3)Straight To You(Straight To You Brian Hughes)
4)De La Luz(Heart Of The Night-Spyro Gyra
5)Old San Juan(Passport-Doug Cameron)
6)Angel Fire(Black Diamond-The Rippingtons
7)Crystal Planet(Crystal Planet-Joe Satriani)
8)Roots Of Coincidence(Imaginary Day Pat Metheny Group)

More Later...

Peace!
Paul
4)De La Luz

yeah, and on the way I could stop in Denver and go see Dotsero and wear all my Jaguars stuff . I have a clip from "Planet Mullins" on my voicemail...I am majorly not a SoCal, no tan, no eating disorder, no implants and still have the family nose...
and some lists, both practical and silly:

Practical:
CDs you can do housework to
1. In The Mix/Higher Octave Artists (the first hot mixes of CJazz songs as far as I know)
2. The Soul of NuGroove..just out and kickin
3. This is Acid Jazz vol 2 on Instinct (later this was reissued as Smooth Jazz Radio something with all the fast/edgy songs taken out..that one won't even motivate you thru the dustbunnies under the couch)
4. Mark Johnson (first one) Big loud thick and noisy...Jinda on percussion..with get you thru two weeks worth of dirty dishes and all the stuff growing in the back rack of the fridge.
5. T-Square Megalith blinds and shutters, my favorite
6. Rippingtons: Tourist in Paradise..great for weed pulling lawn mowing too if you crank it up
7. Acoustic Alchemy/Against the Grain
try to do at least one project and cook at least one dinner from every issue of Martha Stewart Living...
its a good thing.
as is...
Rockstar Charisma with no words

1. Craig Chaquico
2. Paul Howards
3. Jeff Kashiwa/Steve Oliver/Steve Reid (any combination thereof...)
4. Felicia Collins when she was touring with
Al Jarreau
5. Scott Ambush
6. Deborah Henson-Conant
7. Dean Brown

i have to go hand paint and kiln the tiles for my kitchen floor and sort the linens by color/texture and thread count now..bybye....

Shannon:

Sorry, no list tonight, but it's GREAT to see someone list Paul Howards on here!! To be honest, I'd forgotten about him....I won his first CD from WLOQ in Orlando when I lived there, and saw him at the Disney Village several times, as well as the P.I. jazz club. I dusted his CD off tonight, and plan on checkin' it out again over the next few. Thanks again!!

I've got a brain tickler for you. Being a word game fanatic, I have made up the following list of favorite anagrammed Jazz groups:

1) Catchy Aloe Music
2) Gypsy Roar
3) Nip Port & Sing
4) Maestro of Bob
5) Fret Bar Gut
6) Noon Wet Hotbed

Good Luck figuring them out.

Artists/bands I will catch in concert everytime they tour or will attend multiple concerts of same tour:

1)Spyro Gyra
2)Ronnie Montrose
3)Dylan
4)Page/Plant
5)Pat Metheny group

I'd add Rob Mullins, but he doesn't tour as such...I just have to drive 15 miles to catch him in Huntington Beach on Friday night at the Kikuya restaurant...something I've done MANY times!

Peace!
Paul
