Which smooth jazz artists do you think are "clones" of an earlier smooth jazz artist? (example: similar in style)

Dave Koz - "clone" of Kenny G

Brian Hughes - "clone" of Pat Metheney and Larry Carlton

Norman Brown - "clone" of George Benson

Dave Koz clone of Kenny G? That's like saying Mindi Abair is a clone of Martha Stewart!

Welcome back!

I think Dave Koz is quite unique in his sound. No clone there!
Brian Hughes also has a unique sound. His reverb effects on his guitar may sound similar to Metheny but his music is way different. No clone there.
Norman Brown clearly is influenced by Benson or even Wes Montgomery but I think his music has way more energy than Benson has ever done. I don't feel he is trying to be a clone!

Dave Koz ? A clone of Kenny G.? No way! Apples and oranges right there. For better or for worse, Kenny G. has a sound all his own  .

Norman Brown and George Benson - One can definitely hear the George Benson influences in Norman Brown's music, however, I don't think "clone" is the best choice of words to use. These guys were discussed on another contemporary jazz forum, and someone there brought up the point that even though Brown is heavily influenced by Benson, he is "finding his own voice" as well. Actually, this is also paraphrasing DWBass too.

Now, as far as cloned musicians, I can't tell one pop boy group from another. They all sound alike to me. And the "Ohhh baby baby please" R&B male singers  forget it!

I prefer All Music Guide's setup

* influences *similar artists * followers

example:

Pat Metheny

similar artists - John Abercrombie
followers - Brian Hughes
influences - Wes Montgomery

--------------------------

At this time, I cant think of any that would be a "musical clone"........George Benson/Norman Brown (more like a mentor/protege thing)...but GB is multi genre and NB only plays his current style...but yeah, probably if they both do an R&B groove instrumental.

although I'd like a Mindi clone too ;\)

As long as we are taking orders, I'd like a Metheny clone with a side order of Al Jarreau.
And a Steve Oliver clone because I usually need cheering up and he does that..and Richard Smith and Freddie Ravel so we can have east coast and west coast versions touring at the same time. You cali folks are getting too many great concerts in small clubs! , and don't forget Miles G. from AA because he makes me laugh and he is so not a yuppie.

Koz is definitely not a G-clone. Koz doesn't scare my cat or make the dog howl with that ongoing circular breathing thing.

There was some guy named Dean James that put out a really slow CD a few years ago that seemed to be a Boney Cloney. Dezona sounded a little like AA too
