I don't know if you've gotten your hands on a copy of Prince's latest release (Tues. 8/31), but there is a TON of music on there that belongs on a contemporary jazz station.
It's called "PRINCE...The VAULT...Old Friends 4 Sale." There is SOOOO much music on here that is just killer!
Some tracks mimic Miles; some have a seven minute trek into fusion and funk; there's a touch of swining sound.
I don't know from whence this Musical Monster from Minneapolis created these tunes, but they are so jazz oriented, it's such a pleasant surprise!
I know that the weenie jazz station down here would never play any of this, but I thought I'd tip you off since you seem to have free reign over what you play.

The only thing is I don't do Miles, can't do 7 minute songs (heavy commercial load and one 7 minute song takes time that you could use to play 2 songs) and swing is waaay too close to straightahead. I don't do smooth but I don't do straightahead either..sorry.
I do like The Artist FKAP though...but more before he began glutting the market with throwaway trax which he has been doing for several years now.
When I get a station that does CJazz 24/7 I will have room to get a bit more edgy on specialty shows. Right now my specialty show is actually considered edgy by smooth standards and it is not at all, I just play fast songs
