Every single of your passwords are related to songs or album titles.

> You call your dog "Schuu".
> Your car liscense plate spells "SpyGyra"
> If you listen to one of their tunes on the Weather Channel, you record it because it sounds different.
> You start to "brag" explaining every one where did the name came from. (in scientific terms).
> You realize one sunday morning that you have to buy a new CD tower, just for your Spyro Gyra CD'S.
> Even if they have three shows on the same town, the same day, you attend to them. (Nothing personal Paul & Phil)
> When they talk to you about other musicians you say " Yeah but Tom's solos are better" (My case)

>You get mad when you listen to their valuable music in soap operas and cheap TV shows.

> You have several "Best of Spyro" self made tapes. (My case too)

> Their latest release is not removed from your changer until a new one comes out.

> You still have all the tickets of the concerts you've gone. (My case too)

But most of all, you become a "Spyro Freak" when you start to enjoy and understand the talent and the expression of this five outstanding musicians that keeps us posting and posting all year long.

Eril.

Eril- Some good ones but I think you missed an obvious one. Didn't you once say you had Innocent Soul as the signature song in your wedding??
Here's a couple:
-You ALWAYS have 3-4 Spyro Gyra cd's located anywhere you have a player (car, work, home, garage etc.).
-You are proud to wear your Road Scholars T-shirt...even to church on Sunday. I have really done this a couple times.

Ok here is my shot:

- Your wife tells you she has a crush on Schuu, or Jay, or Scott, or Julio, or Joel....and you really don't mind.

- You do not want to take your Spyro CD's out of the car changer and bring them inside for fear that you might forget to put them back, so you buy two of all of them.

You've now seen the band 36 times....

And can't wait till October when they will be at the legendary Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles Calif. And at the Temecula, Calif Balloon and Wine Festival, so you will add concerts 37 and 38 to your memories.

--song or album titles become alternate log-in names for various online practices (I have used laser_material, hannibals_boogie and brightlight as IDs for Yahoo! games)
-- when you record at least three spyro gyra songs (usually four) in spite of the fact that the 90-minute tape for your car stereo is primarily a mix of several artists, styles or even features one particular group (in my case, Earth, Wind & Fire, Steely Dan or even ELO)
-- you can hum (or sing if you're real good) a hundred or more of their songs by heart when you'd be lucky to remember just the titles of half as many by the rippingtons
-- comments regarding the artist known as kenny g include some variation of the statement: "But Jay Beckenstein was as good or better on Galadriel (Rasul, Awakening, A Ballad, Mallet Ballet, Autumn of Our Love), and he did those BEFORE anybody heard Songbird"

You make a new personal "best of" cassette every year, just to incorporate selections from the new CD.

You tell people who are new to Spyro Gyra concerts to watch what the other band members are doing while another one is soloing--and that the interesting backround stuff that the non-soloing Spyro Gyra members come up with is more inventive than other bands "out front" stuff!

Peace!
Paul

You're a Spyro Gyra "Freak" when:

1. "Morning Dance" still sounds fresh and exciting after 7000 plays on your system.

2. the band members remember you by name at the artist after-concert autogrraph sessions.

3. your name is "Paul 'something-or-other.'"

4. you have to buy a new T-shirt at every concert due to wear-and-tear of the one from the previous concert.

Whenever you consider the possibility of opening up your own diner/restaurant, it's a given that the place will be called Igor's.

On your list of 20 cd's you absolutely cannot do without, you've got a dozen from Spyro Gyra.

You start comparing the band's pictures from "AAA" to "Got the Magic"

You have an un-opened copy of "Morning Dance" in Vinyl

You start to play "air keyboards" on every Tom's solos. (My case)

Peolpe tell you "Don't you listen to anything else???" ( very often told by my parents)

You can tell by only listening to the begining of the song, which is it, from which album, and who wrote it.

You notice that Southern California has loads of streets with the same name as many Spyro tunes.

Ocean Parkway is just one.

Hey!

I'm getting out my Thomas Guide Map Book tonight!

Oh, "Alexandra" is another, right off the top.

Peace!

I'm wondering if Paul remembers the times we used to post on the old JCS (Jazz Central Station) discussion board about Spyro Gyra a great deal.

I remember another poster complaining about Paul's many positive posts about the band since he was less of a fan. On one occasion when he was particularly annoyed about the discussion, his approximate words to Paul were, "Man Paul, if your not Spyro Gyra's publicity man you sure ought to be!!!"

Now that's a real-life testimony to someone being a "Spyro-freak" if I've ever heard one.

We were regularly getting flamed by those preferring avante gard jazz. They actually wished we would either go away or shut up. Needless to say, we wouldn't do either when it came to defending the band's music. Had you been a regular poster on that site you would understand the kind of banter that went on there.

Paul . . . remember?

Yep Phil....

I remember it...like it was yesterday.

And yes, I did realize at the time that my attempts to initiate the unitiated might not have been appreciated by a few, or more than a few.

To some, it might have even looked like my jazz(or entire music education) started and stopped with Spyro. My fervent defense of the band when it came to the "flamers" might have some off that way.

Of course, that is not the case. I love alot of styles of jazz, and many, many styles(just about everything--even find a bit to like in rap, punk, Christian, opera--if it's good, it's good)of music.

I do have the courage of my convictions, and thought I did a decent job of at least letting the flamers at JCS know that I had definite reasons why I hold the band in such high reguard.

There is something special about Spyro Gyra to these ears, that's all.

I'd say the same about Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Ronnie Montrose, Pat Metheny Group, and others too.

Peace!
Paul

Paul:

"There's something special about Spyro Gyra to this ears"

As i read this i think about all the music i've heard in my short life. All the artists, concerts i've attended and i've met. But Spyro is different. It goes back to my childhood and my "musician's diaper years".

Maybe this will sound "corny" or "cheesy" but Spyro's been there on every special or sad moment in my life. I remember when my brother died i couldn't listen to "morning dance" for 2 whole years, and the feelings with other songs go on. some about sad moments....... I don't know if this happens to you too.

The thing is that (for me)no matter how many great bands or artists i listen to or get to like a lot, Spyro Gyra will always be at the top.

Eril.

P.S. I hope you guys didin't got bored with this!!!!!!!
