To me, this recording still sounds great today as it did 21 years ago. My faves are "Percolater" & "Safari". What's your faves on this landmark record.
A Re-Mastered Version is an order , wouldn't you say ? Tom's Keyboard work... What can I say, still kicks ass !!!!!!!!!!!!!

My personal favorites from this album are: Catching The Sun ****atoo Autumn Of Our Love Laser Material (yep...the entire first side!) Philly Lovin' You (Interlude) Safari
It's very hard to choose just one or two favorites from such a solid album...
Seriously considering the other 3 tunes, I am--

JazzKnight ...... You Got Taste !!!!
"Catching The Sun" is a classic !!!!!
I saw Spyro perform in 1982 in Elizabeth , N.J. for their "Freetime" tour. Tom Shumann did a hand-held "Moog"n solo that ripped the roof of the venue.
The Jeff Lorber Fusion were the opening act.
I left there deaf , dumb and blind !!!! Great show !!!!!!

I always include "Percolator" on my band's setlist, 'cause of its "disco" beat. Also it's one of my favorites.
"Laser Material" was the first song from Tom that i could play (entirely). And "****atoo" is also on my favorites.

Catching The Sun is indeed a contemporary jazz classic record.
The title track has to be counted in the top ten most recognized Spyro tracks...and the band played a rave-up take of it the last time I saw the band a few months back at the Temecula Wine Fest. In 1997, they opened just about every concert with it.
I've always 'loved' "Lovin' You"...one of the first of many Spyro Gyra tracks where I admire Jay for having the musical instincts to include songs that showcase the talent of the other band members. Most band leaders don't seem to spread the solo time around as much as Jay does, and I've never taken that quality in Jay for granted....and of course, it carries over even more into the live renditions of all the bands tunes.
Laser Material and ****atoo...I love those two because I remember seeing and hearing some great live versions on radio and tv broadcasts.
Peace! Paul

Oh...almost forgot...
How can ya not love "Percolator"...it's the tune that indroduces Spyro Gyra to the video world on the bands first official concert video....great stuff!
Peace! Paul

sad that the censors can't even allow the name of a bird Catching the Sun is fascinating. While no one song stands out in my book among their best, the collection is the best composition of all their albums I think. Laser Material, Autumn of Our Love, Lovin You are awesome. Percolator I never tire of. The title song is great as well as the one that follows it. And of course Philly, Here Again and Safari deserve their day in the sun.

After thorough research , Catching The Sun was certified Gold by the RIAA on June 5 , 1985.
Took 5 years , but it at least it reached that plateau. At that time , if I can recall , CJazz didn't really sell in huge numbers.

Gold is 500,000 units sold, correct?
Pretty impressive for an jazz instrumental record. I read one music study that stated 60% or 70% of people won't even give a song a chance unless it has vocals on it! How sad for them, they are missing out on tons and tons of great music.
Morning Dance must be AT LEAST Platinum, right?
I know I read somewhere that "Three Wishes" and "Collection" have sold over 100,000 units

Hey Paul,
Yes , at the present time sales of 500,000 albums & singles signify GOLD status
At that time , during the '80's , album sales of 1 million certified GOLD status. Sales over 2 million certified PLATINUM
I just found out "Morning Dance" was certified GOLD Sept. 19, 1979.
Morning Dance did not reach Platinum status
