I was reading the older posts you guys had long before i discovered this site and they are just amazing. The accuracy of you guys talking about the albums and concerts is just amazing. I take my hat before you guys.

Well let's go to the point. I'm 27 years old and i started to listen to spyro when i was 8. Wich means that i started very, very young in this stuff. I remember one day , i was working at a record shop (one of the largest chains in PR called "Casa de los Tapes") and the store manager played a cd. Then he asked me: Hey Eril , who's playing there? ". He was playing Patterns in the rain from the Dreams Beyond Control CD. I said "gee i realy don't have a clue" But.... suddenly i recognized Jay and Tom. I rushed to him and said, But.. They do not have singers...
and yes, he showed me the cover of the cd and i was trying to pick up my jaw.
The point is that it was very strange to listen to SG With vocals. I never got used to it. It's like eating cereal with evaporated milk , though it's milk . it's different.

Eril.

File this one under:

The band is open to let any type of music cross-polynate with their jazz. I think Jay has said that he doesn't want to be a member of a club where he is limited in his choices as to what type of music influences his jazz.
The best musicians, be it rock(Dylan, Jimmy Page), or jazz, have always had that attitude.

And how can you not just be blown away by
Julio's vocal turn on the great "De La Luz"?

"Springtime Laughter" is really starting to grow on me too!.

Peace!
Paul

I bought a couple of Basia CDs about 10 years ago. Although I haven't heard anything new from her lately, I love that she collaborated with SG on Springtime Laughter.

Jazzwriter . . .

I think it was in 1994 when Spyro Gyra was involved as an "opening act" in tour with Basia. The New York session of that tour was released under the title "Basia On Broadway." Jay Beckenstein does a wonderful soprano saxophone solo on the Basia hit "Yearning" from that release. While I really like Basia, this one tune (the only one featuring anything from the band) on the release was worth the price of the CD.

Eril, I have always loved the Dreams Beyond Control cd and really enjoy the vocals. I think that is because the band did not fall into the trap of just filling a couple of cuts with vocal because that was what the record company wanted. Their choice of songs and the lead singer (borrowed from Santana) seem to be a perfect match. Then they took it one more step and took the singer on tour with them. (Hey could that mean Basia on the next tour?)
