I had the thrill of my life last night when I went to see Spyro Gyra in concert at Chene Park in Detroit.
Although I have seen the group many times before, this was the first time I had opportunity to talk to Jay Beckenstein ( and also spoke with Scott Ambush - on bass). I'm a bassist, but I also play soprano and alto.
Beckenstein was such a "down to Earth" guy to talk to. We discussed his new material and the types of mouthpieces he was using, and the old-days with Dave Samuels on marimba and also the first time I saw the group at the Park West theater in Chicago, early 1980s.
Everytime I see Spyro Gyra, the music sounds great. It's always a beyond satisfying experience.
I also let Ambush know that the house engineer had his bass sounding "SWEET"! It was perfect. You could hear every single note. And we bass players have a terrible time finding house mixers who know how to EQ the mix for bass.
I just bought a new sax, so I'm gonna have to wait a while before I can order one of Ambushs' custom basses. It sounded great. One of Ambushs' solos that sticks out in my mind is from studio work he did with Mike Tomaro (sax) on tune a called "T-Baggin'". Wow! What a smooth, yet take charge solo.
My only regret, I didn't get to talk with Tom Schuman. That guy is BAD! on Keys! WOW!
Spyro Gyra fan forever,
