Paul Really looking forward to their next performance. With a great audience it should be outstanding. My wife and I have a way of tunning out all the surrounding noise. It really helped in Palm Springs. We love the music and concentrate on that. I'll see you on the road. Look for a guy with a really LOUD Hawaiian shirt with a Ford Woody front and back.

Paul, I think the suit and tie-ers were looking for Benny Goodman.

Hey Rob! Are you mocking Benny? I would theorize that there are several people, including myself, who don't exclusively listen to contemporary jazz. I like a lot of the older stuff too. CJazz is my favourite, but I enjoy Benny, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz, Vince Guaraldi (the guy who wrote the music for the Charlie Brown movies) and Dave Brubeck. ------------------ Mike Chase mike_intel@hotmail.com http://www.geocities.com/ac_bits/

No, no, no. I'm not mocking Benny at all. I'm mocking the people who came to the Spyro concert, got the good seats even though it was supposed to be festival seating, and left in the middle of the first tune. I was hypothesizing that based on the general age group and attire they probably thought they were coming to see a swing band. No disparagement intended.

Hey Rob! I was just joking about that. But seriously, for any other people reading this, who likes older jazz as well, and what bands? ------------------ Mike Chase mike_intel@hotmail.com http://www.geocities.com/ac_bits/

Hi Mike . . .
How old is old?
My dad was a jazz guitarist and devoured all the old Benny Goodman Sextet LP's with Teddy Wilson, Slam Stewart, Red Norvo, etc.
I was raised on the jazz of Stan Kenton, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Shorty Rogers, Stan Getz, Neal Hefti, the Ted Heath Band from England, and the Howard Rumsey Lighthouse Allstars. Favorite vocalists were June Christy and Peggy Lee. Would that be old enough?

Mike,
My favorite concert of all time was Buddy Rich and his big band back around 1980. An awesome performance by Buddy and probably the tightest big band I've ever heard with some extremely good soloists.
My 2nd favorite concert of all time (a very close 2nd) was Spyro Gyra a couple of years ago in Peachtree City, GA. I'm looking forward to the possibility of Spyro's concert this summer with The Atlanta Symphony surpassing Buddy Rich's as my favorite...
As an aside, it's kinda interesting... I didn't really like contemporary jazz until I bought Spyro Gyra's Three Wishes CD back in 1992... opened a whole new world of music for me!

Humphreys By The Bay-- August 24, 2000
There it was, in all it's restored glory-- The spacy, mysterious synth intro by Schuu-- Followed by the familiar descending melody line intro:
It was finally back! OLD SAN JUAN is finally back in the set!
As the opener, no less.
I'm in Spyro Gyra heaven.
Julio with that I-find-joy-in-one-note-then-just-as-much-in-a-flurry-of-notes-as-long-as-it-tells-a-story solo.
Schuu with that oh so tasty and speed of light piano solo.
Jay running out of breath on that closing solo.
Scott and Joel doing all kinds of interesting stuff in the backround.
Oh---I will get to the rest of the concert tommorrow....I am off to see tonights concert in Newport Beach.
Peace! Paul

Gary,
I just noticed that Spyro is playing in downtown Indianapolis on Sept. 7. I'm bidding my schedule for September tomorrow and one of the trips that I'm bidding for has a layover in Indianapolis on none other than Sept. 7! We would get there in the middle of the afternoon, stay at a downtown hotel just around the corner from where Spyro Gyra is playing and not have to leave until early the next morning... perfect!
I've already e-mailed the venue and found out how to get tickets if I'm lucky enough to get the trip. To make it even better, Sept. 7 is my birthday... what a nice treat that would be!
Keeping my fingers crossed...
Rick
BTW, thanks again for the tape... it's awesome!
