Hi all,

I don't post on Spyro often, actually I think this might be my first time ever.

Just wanted to invite anyone who is in the area, yeah like you're just going to be in San Antonio, to come on down to our annual JazzSALive Jazzfest on Sunday, September 21 at Travis Park. Spyro is headlining that night and it's free! Sergio Mendez and Brazil 2003 will be on right before they hit the stage at 8pm. On Saturday, September 20 it's DeeDee Bridgewater and then Branford Marsalis.

I haven't seen them in years, but they were largely responsible for getting me hooked on jazz back when I was 11 or 12 years old (just a few years ago-- right and there comes the lightening bolt with my name on it). But honestly I haven't seen them in at least 5 years and am looking forward to it.

Howdy, TX!

Welcome to the BEST part of the Magic Island! ;\)

I'll be seeing Spyro Gyra in Houston a couple of nights before they are in San Antonio. I think you will really enjoy their live performance of the material from Original Cinema (as well as everything else). I got to see their first live performance of the new stuff back in February in Austin, TX... it was a GREAT concert!

I'm a Delta pilot... sure do enjoy San Antonio when I layover there! You folks have a VERY nice city! Is the jazz festival downtown on the River Walk?

Take care.

Rick

Flew to Las Vegas from 100 miles east of Pittsbugh, PA where I saw "the band". It still amazes me that these guys are the best with all of the other great bands and soloists out there. The fact that Spyro Gyra has existed since the mid 70's and are still going stronger than ever shows that they have a product that people want....great music. That is why they have loyal fans like me that will fly over 4000 miles round trip to see them.

Hi Rick,

Thank you for the warm welcome. You must have seen Spyro at one of my favorite venues in Austin, the One World Theatre. I love that place, it's intimate and the acoustics are great.

As for the jazzfest in SA, it's actually about 2 blocks from the riverwalk, but it's always fun. There are a group of us that have been going for years and we're kind of like a little family. We take turns getting there early and staking our claim to the best spot and then watch each other's stuff all day as we come and go--it's so relaxing and the music is always wonderful.

Concert Review - Newport Beach, CA Aug 27th 2004

Well, I have not had the pleasure to see these guys in a very very long time (late 80's) and they did not disappoint! The setlist was the same as described in a recent posting so I will not repeat here (see Spyro1's review ->
http://www.magicisland.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=000584 ).

This seemed to be the night for the strings: JUILIO WAS ON FIRE -- The emotion he expressed and evoked from the crowd was incredible and then Scott's solo on Wiggle Room (last song of the eve) really stole the show .. ( and this is coming from a sax player that pretty much worships Jay \:\) ). Scotts chops are incredible .. I have never heard a bass solo anything like this ever ... I hope this one is out as a live cut sometime in the future. Jay & Tom were pretty much as I remembered (and expected), having seen them many times in the 80's, however they did not have Jay mixed loud enough in the first set and he seem to have a little trouble with his ear monitor at the start of the night (he appeared to be a little frustrated by it). Ludwig was great!!! and hey, anyone that can keep up with these guys in a song like Conversations definitely makes the grade. -- what an experience he must be having playing with a seasoned bunch of guys.

The setting at the Newport Hyatt is nice, except for the occasional overhead jet taking off from John Wayne airport -- the worst one occurring during Scotts solo in wiggle room -- Scott actually paused briefly and said something to Jay. I think if he knew it was coming, he could have even worked it into the dynamics of his solo.

We went as a group of 8, my wife & I (the only ones having seen them before), my son, his friend & his parents (they were familiar with SG but had never seen them live) and 2 friends that were total SG newbies ( and clueless on what to expect .. they even lived in Newport and had no idea that such great music could be found here). It was very cool to bring my son (15) and his friend and see them so awestruck by these guys - I've been introducing them to Spyro recordings over the last few years and after seeing them live they'll be "lifers" now. My son told me on the way home that us seeing Spyro when they come to town will now be a must .. a new family tradition! His friend (who plays Tenor sax) was just thrilled to meet the band, talk with Jay, get his CD autographed etc. For me it was great to finally meet the band and reminisce with Jay & Tom about a particularly cold August show at Jones Beach (cira '82) and other stuff (House of Music). They are such warm and personable guys and it is great they take the time after a show to spend time with fans.

THANKS to the band for such a great evening and taking the time to talk with us!

Jim
