Concert Review - Newport Beach, CA Aug 27th 2004
Well, I have not had the pleasure to see these guys in a very very long time (late 80's) and they did not disappoint! The setlist was the same as described in a recent posting so I will not repeat here (see Spyro1's review ->
http://www.magicisland.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=000584 ).
This seemed to be the night for the strings: JUILIO WAS ON FIRE -- The emotion he expressed and evoked from the crowd was incredible and then Scott's solo on Wiggle Room (last song of the eve) really stole the show .. ( and this is coming from a sax player that pretty much worships Jay

). Scotts chops are incredible .. I have never heard a bass solo anything like this ever ... I hope this one is out as a live cut sometime in the future. Jay & Tom were pretty much as I remembered (and expected), having seen them many times in the 80's, however they did not have Jay mixed loud enough in the first set and he seem to have a little trouble with his ear monitor at the start of the night (he appeared to be a little frustrated by it). Ludwig was great!!! and hey, anyone that can keep up with these guys in a song like Conversations definitely makes the grade. -- what an experience he must be having playing with a seasoned bunch of guys.
The setting at the Newport Hyatt is nice, except for the occasional overhead jet taking off from John Wayne airport -- the worst one occurring during Scotts solo in wiggle room -- Scott actually paused briefly and said something to Jay. I think if he knew it was coming, he could have even worked it into the dynamics of his solo.
We went as a group of 8, my wife & I (the only ones having seen them before), my son, his friend & his parents (they were familiar with SG but had never seen them live) and 2 friends that were total SG newbies ( and clueless on what to expect .. they even lived in Newport and had no idea that such great music could be found here). It was very cool to bring my son (15) and his friend and see them so awestruck by these guys - I've been introducing them to Spyro recordings over the last few years and after seeing them live they'll be "lifers" now. My son told me on the way home that us seeing Spyro when they come to town will now be a must .. a new family tradition! His friend (who plays Tenor sax) was just thrilled to meet the band, talk with Jay, get his CD autographed etc. For me it was great to finally meet the band and reminisce with Jay & Tom about a particularly cold August show at Jones Beach (cira '82) and other stuff (House of Music). They are such warm and personable guys and it is great they take the time after a show to spend time with fans.
THANKS to the band for such a great evening and taking the time to talk with us!
